The Caselberg Trust and Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature are pleased to offer the Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Residency. The aim of the residency is to provide international and Aotearoa New Zealand writers an opportunity to work on a substantial piece of creative writing and to foster connections among creative writers in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

There are no limits in terms of genre, language, or length of writing, and completion of the project during the residency is not a requirement. The residency is offered annually for a period of six weeks to writers from other UNESCO Cities of Literature and to Aotearoa New Zealand writers in alternating years. In 2023 the Residency is offered to a writer from another UNESCO City of Literature with at least one published work. It will run from 3 October – 14 November 2023.

All residents receive a stipend of NZ$4000 (~2300 EUR). In addition international residents will receive up to NZ$3000 (~1750 EUR) towards travel costs. Accommodation is provided rent-free at the Caselberg House for the six-week duration of the residency.

The international residency 2023 has been planned to coincide with the biennial Dunedin Writers & Readers Festival and the Festival Trust has generously made available to the resident a Festival Pass and green-room entry to all Festival events.

The Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Residency is run jointly and collaboratively by the Caselberg Trust and Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature. Funding from the Caselberg Trust is provided through a generous bequest by the late Margaret Egan.

Deadline: 14 April 2023

More info and apply: https://hail.to/dunedin-unesco-city-of-literature/article/iPXYotZ

Yarra Ranges Council is seeking expressions of interest from multidisciplinary teams of local, national or international artists to design, supply and install a large-scale land artwork at Kalorama Park, located within the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria, Australia.

This major public art commission, located close to the highest point of the Dandenong Ranges, will create an iconic marker for the area, viewable from a range of distances and perspectives.

The Kalorama Park Land Artwork will be a large-scale, site-specific work, creating a unique and remarkable destination for local residents and visitors to ngurrak barring.

The Artwork will complement the form and character of the site and its surrounds and convey a concept that is deeply considered and reflective of the environment and cultural and historical context of the immediate area and/or the wider Dandenong Ranges.

As a Land artwork, it will be integrated with the landscape and must be made using natural or mostly natural materials. It should reflect the ngurrak barring (also referred to as RidgeWalk) vision, particularly by being environmentally responsive.

The budget for this project is up to $360,000 AUD (~230,000 EUR).

Deadline: 5 April 2023

More info and apply: https://shaping.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/consultations/ridgewalk/public-artwork-expression-interest

The Mistra Environmental Communication team at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) are excited to facilitate one artist-in-residence (AiR) in the Sunshine Coast, Australia in 2023.

The AiR@USC offers the opportunity to investigate and explore the environment and sustainability through immersion in the Mistra Environmental Communication research that is ongoing at USC. In intersecting academics with their practice, the hope is that the selected artist will materialise unconventional perspectives that enrich contemporary academic discourse on environmental issues. By awarding a compelling grant, access to facilities, affiliation with an academic host, and organisational support from the team at USC, the aim is to offer a fulfilling opportunity to examine how the environment and sustainability is understood and expressed in a politicised, polarised and complex world.

The AiR@USC is performed on location in the Sunshine Coast, Australia, from the 1 March - 30 April 2023.

The artist selected for the AiR@USC is supported with:

Dialogical exchange with the academic host.

Organisational support to showcase their produced work.

Immersion in the Mistra Environmental Communication research process and community.

Access to library and IT network facilities.

A 54,000 SEK grant (~5000 EUR) of which:

37,000 SEK are earmarked to cover accommodation and living costs in Sunshine Coast for 2 months.

13,000 SEK are earmarked to cover travel costs.

4000 SEK are earmarked to cover material costs.

Deadline: 30 November 2022

More info and apply: https://mistra.fsv.cuni.cz/air/air-usc-call

Science Gallery Melbourne: Dark Matters Open Call (Australia)

Science Gallery Melbourne is inviting proposals for projects to be included in their 2023 exhibition ‘Dark Matters’. This open call is extended to everyone, from every level of experience and from every discipline and every culture. First Peoples, Queer, CALD, BIPOC, Neuro-diverse, Disabled People and people from the Deaf community are encouraged to apply.

Dark Matters explores the fundamental essence of life and the universe and how so much of it remains a mystery to us. We don’t know what makes up about 95% of our universe – which we believe is dark energy (70%) and dark matter (25%). Dark matter consists of a mysterious substance that does not present an interaction with electromagnetic forces, which means it does not absorb, reflect it, or emit light.

In an era defined by the power of modelling data, technology and simulations, the search for dark matter can be seen as a symbol of the limits of our cognitive experience – will we ever fully understand it? What other unseen or unspoken materialities and forces are at play in our lives? How can the search for dark matter help us imagine new possibilities for life, and our relationship with non-human entities and systems? How can we build creative technologies and tools that help us access new environments and understandings that are undefinable, unmeasurable, and unsettling?

Projects can be new, in-development or existing works that have already been presented. They can take any form and involve any equipment or materials. The exhibition will be on for approximately 4 months, so this should be taken into consideration. However, projects can be evolving and dynamic and continue to experiment with time and space and take risks over this time.

Typically, projects selected via Science Gallery Melbourne open calls are funded for up to $8000 AUD (~5400 EUR), which would include all fees, materials, and travel costs.

Deadline: 5 August 2022

More info and apply: https://sciencegallery.org/opencall/dark-matters

Our guide to cross-border mobility for artists and cultural workers from and travelling to New Zealand.

This cultural mobility funding guide lists national, local and international resources from both public and private funders. Two kinds of opportunity are included: outgoing and incoming. The outgoing opportunities are for nationals and residents of New Zealand wishing to travel outside the country. The incoming opportunities are for nationals from other countries who want to travel to New Zealand.

The guide only lists regular opportunities that are accessible online (for instance for touring, residencies, collaborations, training, etc.). Funds where information is only available offline, schemes which do not use open calls, and one-off or short-term funding programmes are not included.

Since 2011, On the Move has published 60 funding guides focusing on specific countries or world regions. They aim to make information on mobility funding clear and accessible, letting artists and cultural operators explore the field of opportunities. By gathering a large body of information in one place, they also help funders and policymakers to see how support is structured and to notice any shortfalls.

Our guides are always produced with partners, organisations and/or researchers who have a close relationship to the region, and we try to make them as complete as possible. If you see something is missing and it meets our editorial policy, then you can email mobility@on-the-move.org

JamFactory > FUSE Glass Artist Residency (Australia)

Awarded biennially in alternate years to the FUSE Glass Prize, JamFactory’s FUSE Glass Artist Residency aims to create significant opportunities for established, mid-career artists working in glass. The residency will enable a selected artist to work with skilled assistants, take risks and experiment with the development of new work using or incorporating hot blown glass.

The residency will run for up to 4 weeks at JamFactory in Adelaide between March and August 2021. Applicants may wish to propose splitting the residency into 2 x 2-week periods or a shorter more concentrated period.

A further outcome of the Residency will be a solo exhibition at Carrick Hill – the iconic South Australian heritage site, due to open impressive new purpose-built galleries in November 2020. The exhibition will launch in late 2021 and should include work created during or as a result of the Residency along with other appropriate/existing work. The exhibition will be a co-production between JamFactory and Carrick Hill with the scale and nature of the show to be determined through negotiation with the Recipient. The exhibition will be widely promoted, accompanied by a printed (and online) catalogue, an opening event and public programmes.

The Residency will include:

12 four-hour glass-blowing sessions with 2 assistants.

Self-contained accommodation in the JamFactory apartment.

Provision of studio workspace.

Access to the cold-workshop and very basic lamp-working and kiln facilities.

An allowance of $2,000 to assist with living expenses.

Return flights and transfers or costs related to car travel to and from Adelaide.

Contribution towards return freight for work produced.

Applicants must be permanent residents or citizens of Australia or New Zealand and must have a demonstrated professional practice as an artist working with glass of at least 8 years.

Deadline: 11 September 2020

More info and apply: https://www.jamfactory.com.au/fuse-glass-artist-residency

Science Gallery Melbourne > Open Call for Exhibition, ‘SWARM’ (Australia)

Science Gallery Melbourne is seeking proposals for works that can be included as part of its 2021 exhibition SWARM.

At a time of unprecedented societal upheaval due to the current global viral pandemic, Science Gallery Melbourne is delving into the science and art behind what it means to be part of a pack. Have we become a plague overpopulating the world? Are we at risk of becoming culturally homogenous and less individual? Or are we becoming a superorganism capable of superior collective intelligence with the ambition to spread beyond the realms of the Earth?

Potential subthemes:

Tribalism, political movements, flashmobs, social networks.

Globalisation, overpopulation, colonisation.

Individual v’s the group.

Hivemind, groupthink, misinformation and memes.

Swarming behaviour in biology (social insects, bird murmurations etc).

Superorganisms.

Immune systems, herd immunity, pandemics.

Nanobots, drones, robotics, mechatronics, big data and swarm algorithms.

Science fiction, zombies.

This guide helps navigate the sometimes complex processes surrounding visas, work permits and taxes when preparing to tour internationally. Dedicated to Australian and New Zealand performing arts companies touring worlwide, it contains useful information for artists of all countries and disciplines on target countries in Europe, Asia, Latin and North America.

Each year hundreds of Australian and New Zealand artists perform overseas. The guide provides links to sources of information, some written for the cultural sector and other more general websites. It also includes case studies that feature ways in which arts companies and producers actually operate and some of the problems they encounter.

The guide was initiated and developed by the Australia Council for the Arts and Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa in response to the needs of the artists and arts organisations they work with. It was researched and written by Sophie Travers and Linda Sastradipradja.

It focuses on the regions identified by Australian and New Zealand performing arts companies as high priorities:

• Australia and New Zealand

• Asia – China, Hong Kong, Japan, Republic of Korea, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan

• Europe – Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom

• Latin America – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico

• North America – Canada and the United States of America
