Urbane Künste Ruhr: Artist Residency, 'Healing Complex' (Germany)

Urbane Künste Ruhr in Bochum invites artists who are interested in working with local networks and public meeting places to take part in a three-month residency (April – June 2024) for its upcoming 2024 season. The residency is part of the Healing Complex project. Two positions will be allocated for the residency. Interested artists can apply individually or jointly; applications from collectives are also very welcome.

Since 3 June 2022, Urbane Künste Ruhr has been running the project Healing Complex (2018–ongoing) in Gelsenkirchen, which was initiated by the artist Irena Haiduk based on the model of antique building complexes that combined art and healing. Irena Haiduk’s artistic practice links the symbolic capital of the art field with real economies, which is particularly relevant in a post-industrial region such as the Ruhr area.

The residency at the Healing Complex offers the opportunity to intensively explore the project, the existing networks and the urban-social context in Gelsenkirchen Erle over a period of twelve weeks. The stay is divided into two phases: the first six weeks lend themselves to an examination of the location and offer the opportunity to use the Healing Complex for research and as a studio in order to develop a situation-specific project. This conception phase is followed by a six-week implementation period, during which the previously conceived project is to be realised on-site and addressed to a broad public.

Based on the results of the first two exhibition phases at the Healing Complex in 2022 and 2023, the guest artist residency offers the option of exploring forms of networks and testing the opening and activation of artistic institutions and urban spaces. However, the Healing Complex is just as well suited for an examination of the architecture of the modern church building, which was erected in 1963, as well as the history of the Erle district, whose origins are shaped by mining.

The guest artist residency is aimed at professionally working international and national artists and collectives who are interested in social, situational and site-specific contexts in their artistic work.

The residency offers:

A work and production residency from 2 April – 30 June 2024 with content supervision and close ties to Urbane Künste Ruhr.

A guest artist’s fee of €4500 gross.

Accommodation in Gelsenkirchen will be provided.

Costs for arrival and departure will be covered once.

Travel by public transport for research purposes can be reimbursed.

Shared use of the office space on site (Cranger Straße 338, 45891 Gelsenkirchen).

Deadline: 5 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.urbanekuensteruhr.de/en/news/open-call-zu-gast-im-healing-complex

Associazione Demetra: ‘Nutrimenti_habitat’ Residency for Participatory Projects (Italy)

Associazione Demetra, an organisation active for over 18 years in the field of supporting creativity in all its expressive forms and in the creation of innovative formats in the cultural sphere, in collaboration with Indisciplinarte, as part of the C.U.R.A. Centro Umbro di Residenze Artistiche, is promoting the Nutrimenti_habitat creativo 2023 residency call.

The underlying idea of this residency has always been to sow the seeds for daring projects to grow together in the future. From the recent editions of the Nutrimenti residency, ideas have emerged that, developed in synergy with artists, creatives, and professionals from Associazione Demetra, along with partners and supporters, have given life to the ‘Concert from the Balconies’ event, the participatory artistic project ‘Domestic Museum’, and the programme aimed at the younger generation ‘GenZ’.

Therefore, this call is open to artists of any background, preferably with an interdisciplinary inclination, who have already realised or are interested in creating participatory artistic projects and performative and/or installation interventions in unconventional urban settings, with a particular focus on public spaces.

Through this call, up to a maximum of 3 artists without age or geographical restrictions will be selected. They will reside in Terni (Italy) from 4-17 December 2023, and will work both as a team and independently, with the support of local creatives and Associazione Demetra volunteers.

The overarching theme for this year’s gathering is ‘the INVISIBLE’. Starting from this broad theme and its multiple possible interpretations, the selected artists will be invited to explore and experiment in a creative way to impact the urban and human context, to disrupt the normal course of daily life, to create communities, to overcome the alienation that separates us, to take risks, and to sow the seeds for the future.

Associazione Demetra will provide the following for each selected artist:

Shared housing from 4-17 December 2023.

A gross contribution of €600.

A €200 contribution for meals.

A travel reimbursement of up to €200.

Logistical and organisational support.

Deadline: 15 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.associazionedemetra.it/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Nutrimenti2023_Open-Call.pdf

TORIGOYA Project is an artist-in-residence programme run by the Hirono Town in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Its aim is to promote Hirono’s recovery from the disaster through the power of contemporary art. A particular focus of the TORIGOYA Project is to increase the number of people visiting and living in Hirono Town.

The artist-in-residence programme will be based on the theme of the ‘TORIGOYA (rooster hut)’, a traditional local new year event, to add new value to the ‘TORIGOYA’ through contemporary art, thereby communicating Hirono Town’s attractions to the world.

Invited artists will stay in Hirono Town for a total of 30 days between 11 December 2023 – 15 January 2024 to research the history, climate, culture or some other factor of Hirono Town and create their own site-specific artworks in collaboration with town residents, especially youth and children as socially engaged art. Artists should also create an artwork about the process of building his/her/their site-specific artwork in some form of media till the end of February. There are no restrictions on the media. It can be a photograph or video, painting, 3D works, media art, literary work such as poem, novel or play, or musical work.

Site-specific works created during the residency will be burned (or dismantled if they cannot be burned) in the same manner as traditional TORIGOYA during the ‘Dondoyaki’ on 8 January.

100,000 yen (~635 EUR) will be provided as a provisional payment upon arrival in Hirono for various activities during the stay. The committee will cover the actual cost of materials, tools and for production up to 100,000 yen (~635 EUR). The cost of transportation from the artist’s current address to Hirono Town will be paid up to 100,000 yen (~635 EUR). Two round trips within this amount are acceptable. Accommodation is provided.

Deadline: 30 October 2023

More info and apply: https://hironotorigoya.com

The 2019 European Parliamentary Elections marked a turning point with a remarkable surge in voter turnout – the highest in 25 years. However, to bridge the generational gap in political engagement, ‘Pop the Vote! Culture on the Ballot’ is gearing up for an electrifying initiative leading up to the 2024 elections. Led by Culture Action Europe and co-funded by the European Parliament, this project calls upon young artists and student artists, aged 18-30, to be Changemakers in their communities. In early 2024, selected Changemakers will mobilise citizens, especially underrepresented groups, using art and culture as tools to enhance political participation.

52 Changemakers across 14 EU countries will be selected to participate in the Changemakers’ Playground Camp, a one-week training programme hosted in Belgium from 10-16 February 2024. The programme will include an immersive training on artivism, campaigning and the use of artistic expression as a political language. Also during the camp, Changemakers will spend a day in Brussels learning first-hand about the European Union, its institutions and the European Parliamentary elections. By the end of the Playground Camp in Belgium, Changemakers will have designed a blueprint to carry out two events in their respective countries. These engagement events, reaching a minimum total of 100 citizens, will use arts and artivism as a methodology to trigger citizen engagement leading up to the EP elections in June 2024.

This call seeks Changemakers: artists, student artists and/or cultural workers between the ages of 18-30. Changemakers are people like you who want to deepen their artistic and activism practices by exploring innovative ways of community engagement using the language of the arts and culture for political change.

Selected Changemakers will receive the following:

A 7-day training course hosted in Belgium.

Travel to and from each Changemaker’s resident countries and Belgium.

6 nights of accommodation.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner for 7 days.

Each Changemaker will be contracted as a volunteer of Culture Action Europe (from February – June 2023) and will receive 1,197 EUR in total to support the execution of their engagement events.

Applicants must reside in one of the following participating countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. (Note: You do not need to be a citizen of any of the Pop the Vote! countries, but you do need to be a resident in one of them.)

Deadline: 15 October 2023

More info and apply: https://cultureactioneurope.org/projects/pop-the-vote/open-call-for-changemakers/

Nyskaben: Participatory Art Residency for Artists and Cultural Practitioners (Denmark)

Nyskaben is organising a residency from 1-30 June 2024 for 4 artists/cultural practitioners (A/CP) in Lundø, Denmark.

Nyskaben invite A/CP that work with participatory art within their own artistic practice, or in other cultural fields such as social work, youth work, formal and informal education to apply. The participatory aspect can be in the development process (i.e. working with people throughout the research and creative process) or the end product (i.e. audience participation or performative games).

The call prioritises A/CP that work within the fields of performance and visual art, and who address environmental questions of any kind in their work.

Individual applications are recommended, but Nyskaben will allow applications from duos or groups with good justification.

Only people legally residing in a Creative Europe country can apply. As the residency promotes international collaboration and takes place in Denmark, A/CP residing in Denmark cannot apply.

Nyskaben specifically encourage A/CP who want to boost their activities after having taken up a parental leave to apply. There is the opportunity for families (partners, children) to join in the residency for 2 of the 4 weeks.

The residency offers:

Free accommodation in a small but fully equipped vacation house.

Travel allowance of 350 - 700 EUR per person, based on distance and means of transportation.

A daily allowance of 25 EUR per day for food expenses, local transport, etc.

A communal workspace (no black box).

The residents will get the opportunity to learn from each other and work closely with local artists and cultural practitioners in a small rural environment surrounded by the beautiful sea of the Danish Limfjord. About 150 people inhabit the peninsula and many locals are consciously invested in strengthening their relation to the landscape of Lundø, which is considered a national treasure struggling with ecological challenges.

Deadline: 15 September 2023

More info and apply: https://www.nyskaben.com

Idensitat: Transversal Aesthetics, ‘Silenced ~ Reactivated’ (Spain)

Transversal Aesthetics is an Idensitat project taking place in a number of Spanish locations, and within the Valencian Region, thanks to the collaboration of the Consorci de Museus de la Comunitat Valenciana.

Transversal Aesthetics aims to realise projects involving research, mediation and artistic production connecting themes with local contexts, thereby activating a variety of social spaces through the transversality of artistic practices. There have been three previous editions since 2018, each dealing with a specific. For this fourth edition, working processes will be developed around the concepts of ‘silenced ~ reactivated’.

Idensitat is interested in examining the transition between a silenced space and its reactivation, and the role that art can play in this fragile change of structure. Although sometimes perceived as simple or even subtle, a movement may contain a great capacity to ‘reactivate’ a space, a social context, or a renewed attitude in relation to the uses made of the spaces, or the activities which take place in them. Artistic practice may act as a catalyst and an accelerator for the transformation between these two conditions, crystallising and causing the appearance of an intermediate space, moving between one state and another, and generating a variation which in many cases is ephemeral and even momentary, but which is capable of modifying, of questioning, or of making rigid structures flexible.

Applicants can apply to work on this theme in one of three possible cities/contexts:

Alicante: a two-month residency of research and creation around the proposed theme will take place between October and November 2023. The residency will take place at the Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras in Alicante, and will be activated jointly with Idensitat.

València: A practice developed intermittently using face-to-face and distance activations, starting in January 2024, linked to mediation practices. This practice, linked to processes of mediation and production, will be supported by Idensitat, with the collaboration of the CCCC.

Benicarló: A two-month residency between October and November 2023, in collaboration with MUCBE, with the possibility that the museum itself may be the subject of work, or within the local, social or neighbourhood associative context of Benicarló with support and accompaniment from Idensitat and local agents.

The residency fees will include €2400 as artist fees, €2000 for production, and €1400 for accommodation and travel, which will be managed directly by the artist.

Deadline: 9 July 2023

More info and apply: https://www.idensitat.net/en/current-projects/transversal-aesthetics-2/id-cmcv/430-et-cmcv-silenciado-reactivado-eng/1751-estetiques-transversals-silenciat-reactivat-2

Mekong Cultural Hub is calling for applications from community arts practitioners with at least two years of experience to join their learning programme ‘Experiments in Community Collaboration’.

Basca Theater: Call for Cultural Interventions for ‘Invisible’ Communities (Romania)

Basca Theater invite 3 international and/or Romanian artists to spend two weeks in Timisoara, and to create cultural interventions in the city, with Basca Theater’s team facilitating access to various invisible communities. In this call, the focus is on artists who share the values of Basca Theater and the ‘in : v z b l festival’: solidarity, dialogue, respect and dignity. Artists are expected to respect these values and take them into account in creating and conducting community interventions.

in : v z b l festival was born from the need to bring together artists from several fields, who could interact with various categories of audiences. This meeting aims to offer everyone (artists and the public) different perspectives on the reality around us. The desire is to initiate a dialogue through which what is sometimes ‘invisible’ in society begins to become visible, through art.

The voices of various vulnerable, ‘invisible’ groups are often unheard or even unspoken. Through this festival Basca Theater want to give these groups a voice and context to self-represent and to make this voice stronger in the community. Diversity is an underexploited wealth. Different cultures and different perspectives on reality are a learning opportunity for all of us, as long as we manage to put at the centre of our interactions the values and principles that the festival affirms.

Artists can apply with a proposal for a community artistic intervention, explaining the work process, the intended target group and the final result. Selected artistic interventions can take place between 1 September – 15 November 2023. Basca Theater offer artist fee, transport, accommodation and meals.

Deadline: 23 April 2023

More info and apply: https://basca.tm.ro/en/jurnal/open-call-for-international-artists-in-v-z-b-l-festival-2023

BETA CIRCUS aims to address new trends in contemporary circus and to offset the lack of opportunities for artists to get trained at a high professional level.

‘BETA CIRCUS Participatory experience’ aims to create a European transnational opportunity to explore the participatory circus as a future trend that can engage the public in circus’ creative process, letting audiences become co-authors, editors, and observers of artistic work.

BETA CIRCUS Participatory experience activities are scheduled in between 2023 and 2025, taking place in 4 European countries: Italy, Latvia, Portugal and Serbia. The methodology is divided into 2 main steps: first the participants will join 2 artistic laboratories (3 days each) and after the capacity building actions each artistic collective will join a local artistic organisation to implement an artistic experience in one partner country, with the support of one expert mentor (~3 weeks).

BETA CIRCUS Participatory experience is open to:

Individuals or circus arts collectives (up to 4 people) with or without experience in participatory circus but interested to join the participatory arts methodology and test it applied to circus arts. Applications will be accepted from all the European Union countries, as well as other countries currently eligible for Creative Europe Programme.

Artistic collectives (up to 4 people) from Italy, Latvia, Portugal and Serbia with experience in participatory arts and interested to join the project and test it applied to circus arts.

Each selected participant (single artist or group) will attend without costs the capacity building programme of BETA CIRCUS Participatory experience, as well as the mentoring programme with the designated expert mentor. The project covers travel expenses for designated activities (up to 300€ per person per trip), accommodation, and meals for the artistic laboratories. BETA CIRCUS partners will pay 3500€ to each selected artistic proposal.

Goethe-Institut: Cities Ahead in Logroño (Spain)

Cities Ahead is a European programme initiated by the Goethe-Institut that promotes the transformation of creative places. Its aim is to transform the city into an ideal ecosystem for culture and creativity, harnessing its full potential for global dissemination and international cultural cooperation. Logroño, as the host city of Concéntrico – International Festival of Architecture and Design, will act as a pioneer of the programme in Spain.

Cities Ahead is launching an open call for international creatives to propose participatory actions for the transformation of the public space, integrating aspects of urban innovation and sustainable/ecological development. This call aims to put the citizens of Logroño at the centre of the city’s future. By implementing a participatory artistic, activist or any other creative action in Logroño, the city will become a vivid marketplace for new ideas, tools and formats. The project puts the initiatives of artists, designers, activists and other creatives in dialogue with the citizens of Logroño. The current challenges of insufficient investments, deterioration of shared values and shrinking public spaces are prevalent in many cities and will be tackled in Logroño through participatory practices that support ecological, economic and social sustainability. Being engaged in the development, production and adoption of public spaces will lead to a greater sense of responsibility and belonging among the citizens.

The programme will fund innovative and participatory practices with the aim of transforming the public space and helping to make it more creative, humane, sustainable and egalitarian. The proposed practice must be adapted to the local needs of Logroño and its citizens. From all applications, a jury will choose three practices that will be invited to come to Logroño and adapt their practice to the local context. To do so, the creatives will work closely with local stakeholders. The selected proposals will be carried out in Logroño during Concéntrico 09 – International Architecture and Design Festival, which will take place from 27 April - 2 May 2023.

Each of the selected projects will receive 2000€ as a project fee and 2000€ for the execution of the project on site, which includes a lump sum for travel expenses and any additional material or development costs.

Deadline: 10 January 2023

More info and apply: https://www.goethe.de/en/kul/wis/ser/bik/cah.html

For the Public Good (FTPG) is an online international programme for 5 artists organised by Leeds 2023. It’s aimed at artists who want to work with their local community and an academic researcher from Leeds. The artists will look to create unique artistic propositions on how technology can be used to help communities understand climate change issues that could potentially be implemented globally.

FTPG is looking for musicians, theatre-makers, painters, authors, performance artists, sculptures, actors, digital artists and any other form of artistic practitioner who is interested in how technology could be used to benefit their community to generate climate change solutions.

Five international artists will be paired with researchers from the University of Leeds. Each artist and academic will have a shared interest in Climate Justice and collaborate remotely with the goal of sharing their ideas to representatives of international community groups, local to each of the artists.

The project will create international connections, share cultural learning and expertise, finding ways of sharing research about climate change through art and creativity. Academics and artists enter the experience on an equal footing and the agenda for their sessions is set by both the artist and academic.

The programme will run over 11 sessions. The first introduction session will take place in December 2022 and the rest of the 10 sessions will take place over an 8 to 9-week period with pre-planned and flexible dates during that time.

Artist participation fee: £2200 per artist. Each participant will be paid £200 per session. Sessions will last between 3 and 4 hours and there will be 11 sessions in total.

Community Leader participation fee: £1000. One member of the community organisations local to the artists will be paid for their contribution at a rate of £200 per session. Sessions will last between 3 and 4 hours and community leaders will be required to attend 5 sessions in total.

An additional accessibility fund is available to support you through the programme. Access can include interpretation, childcare, support workers, data packages and other support that ensures you can participate in the programme.

In 2021, Cultural Bridge launched its pilot programme supporting seven new artistic collaborations between organisations across the UK and Germany to initiate projects exploring socially engaged arts practice through intercultural exchange and dialogue.

Applications are now open for the 2023-2024 Cultural Bridge programme. This is an opportunity for arts organisations based in the UK and Germany who embody cultural democracy and wish to forge or develop bilateral partnerships to work together and share artistic practice.

The Cultural Bridge Year 2 programme has two funding tiers:

Tier 1: New Partnerships: Supporting new partnerships between UK and German organisations, applicants can request between £5000 (approx €5900) - £10,000 (approx €11,900) in total per partnership.

Tier 2: Established Partnerships: Supporting existing partnerships between UK and German organisations, applicants can request up to £30,000 (approx €35,800) per partnership.

This programme is open to all cultural organisations with proven expertise in socially engaged artistic practice.

Partnerships must include at least one German partner and one UK partner, from any one of the four nations: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Applications can be for physical, digital or hybrid activity focussed on socially engaged/participatory practice and in response to the programme aims/themes.

Deadline: 26 October 2022

More info and apply: https://www.cultural-bridge.info/funding/

The Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute: Open Call for Site-specific Projects in Vadsø (Norway)

What roles do art, culture, and creative industries play in creating a sustainable, dynamic, and viable regional society? The Vadsø Art Association, the Varanger festival, Vadsø guest studio (TFFK), the Artists’ Association of Lapland, and the Finnish Norwegian Cultural Institute invite artists to participate in a new open call.

The call is open to professional artists or artist groups from Finland or Finnish Lapland, as well as those who may not originally come from these areas, but who identify as northerners by virtue of either living in or having a connection with the north.

The open call is looking for site-specific projects to be produced in Vadsø during the Varanger festival 9-12 August 2023. The chosen artist(s) will also be invited to a two-week residency at Vadsø guest studio from 16-30 January 2023. The open call seeks to encourage co-operation and dialogue beyond borders in the northern regions of Norway and Finland. The organisers encourage artists to co-create in dialogue with the local community in Vadsø.

The northern regions of Norway and Finland are under pressure, caused by the trend of people moving to urban areas due to ever-increasing urbanisation and politics. Research examining how to stem this trend and encourage people to relocate to these areas and contribute to their growth has pointed to sectors such as aquaculture, tourism, and wind power as part of the solution. But will this development be sustainable? And what about the quality of residents’ day-to-day lives and the businesses that are connected to the culture and human resources in the area as a possible source for growth? Are these resources shared across borders?

The cost of travel and accommodation in Vadsø for two weeks in January and one week in August 2023 will be covered. The grant for the project will be between NOK 20,000 and NOK 40,000. The cost of materials will have to be applied for from other sources.

Deadline: 30 September 2022

More info and apply: https://finno.no/en/projects/open-call-deep-water-cieknalis-cahci-syva-vesi-dypt-vann/

Throughout the project timeline, youth work in collaboration with community members and Beam Staff to complete aspects of the projects.

For each selected project artists receive a $5000 award and have a fabrication budget of around $15,000.

CÔA – Corridor of Arts: Land Art Festival Residency and Commission (Portugal)

The Côa - Corridor of Arts land art festival celebrates the cultural heritage of the Greater Côa Valley in northern Portugal, which has existed since prehistory, when people first began to engrave the creatures that lived in that region on rock. These engravings of aurochs, horses and other wild animals illustrate that man has always admired nature. The Greater Côa Valley is a natural wildlife corridor, which from that time until today maintains its appeal as a site rich in biodiversity and diverse landscapes.

The Côa - Corridor of Arts festival seeks to connect artists with communities in a natural environment, the Greater Côa Valley, to co-create works of art that will mark the landscape. Using natural materials (e.g. wood, stone, water, etc.), and respecting their natural decay, they will be integrated naturally into the landscape evolution process.

The first event will be held in the summer of 2023. The event will have a mobile format, taking place in three to five different sections of the Greater Côa Valley on consecutive weekends. The event concentrates artistic programming close to cities and towns and will have an artistic programme and itinerary to be visited along the Grand Route of the Côa Valley.

The event will feature an exhibition of 6 to 8 works of art that will remain in place and that will be conceptualised and built by an artist with the involvement of a community. The goal is to create a museum of contemporary art outdoors and along the Greater Côa Valley to be visited at a slow and respectful pace, in line with the rhythms of nature.

This is a call to contemporary artists and makers who are interested in being in residence in the Greater Côa Valley. Residencies of between four and six weeks will explore and celebrate, through co-creation with local communities, the link between nature and art, celebrating the long cultural heritage of the Greater Côa Valley. An award of 4000 EUR accompanies each residency, covering the residency costs and creation of the pieces, with additional financial support available to cover the artist’s travel and accommodation costs.

The festival particularly welcomes proposals from interdisciplinary artists whose practice transgresses the boundaries between disciplines and/or those with experience of site-specific, interactive, or socially engaged work.

Deadline: 30 August 2022

More info and apply: https://coa-corredordasartes.pt/call-for-artists
