Urbane Künste Ruhr: Artist Residency, 'Healing Complex' (Germany)

Urbane Künste Ruhr in Bochum invites artists who are interested in working with local networks and public meeting places to take part in a three-month residency (April – June 2024) for its upcoming 2024 season. The residency is part of the Healing Complex project. Two positions will be allocated for the residency. Interested artists can apply individually or jointly; applications from collectives are also very welcome.

Since 3 June 2022, Urbane Künste Ruhr has been running the project Healing Complex (2018–ongoing) in Gelsenkirchen, which was initiated by the artist Irena Haiduk based on the model of antique building complexes that combined art and healing. Irena Haiduk’s artistic practice links the symbolic capital of the art field with real economies, which is particularly relevant in a post-industrial region such as the Ruhr area.

The residency at the Healing Complex offers the opportunity to intensively explore the project, the existing networks and the urban-social context in Gelsenkirchen Erle over a period of twelve weeks. The stay is divided into two phases: the first six weeks lend themselves to an examination of the location and offer the opportunity to use the Healing Complex for research and as a studio in order to develop a situation-specific project. This conception phase is followed by a six-week implementation period, during which the previously conceived project is to be realised on-site and addressed to a broad public.

Based on the results of the first two exhibition phases at the Healing Complex in 2022 and 2023, the guest artist residency offers the option of exploring forms of networks and testing the opening and activation of artistic institutions and urban spaces. However, the Healing Complex is just as well suited for an examination of the architecture of the modern church building, which was erected in 1963, as well as the history of the Erle district, whose origins are shaped by mining.

The guest artist residency is aimed at professionally working international and national artists and collectives who are interested in social, situational and site-specific contexts in their artistic work.

The residency offers:

A work and production residency from 2 April – 30 June 2024 with content supervision and close ties to Urbane Künste Ruhr.

A guest artist’s fee of €4500 gross.

Accommodation in Gelsenkirchen will be provided.

Costs for arrival and departure will be covered once.

Travel by public transport for research purposes can be reimbursed.

Shared use of the office space on site (Cranger Straße 338, 45891 Gelsenkirchen).

Deadline: 5 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.urbanekuensteruhr.de/en/news/open-call-zu-gast-im-healing-complex

Supergau: Open Call for Artistic projects for Outdoor Space (Austria)

Supergau festival in Salzburg in Austria is calling for artistic projects in outdoor space.

Supergau is an imaginary landscape, a culturally primeval landscape. It is temporary, and during the festival it lies like a second layer over the existing topography of one of the five Salzburg regions [Gaue] (Flachgau, Lungau, Pinzgau, Pongau, Tennengau).

Supergau is freed from the supposed dominance of the city with its programmed cultural spaces, freed from municipal museums, theatres, cabaret stages, that need to be filled by a target audience. Freed from the concept of the public space because Supergau knows only landscape. Supergau is surface and depth at the same time. Supergau has forest - and meadowscapes, mountainscapes, housescapes, asphalt- and concrete-scapes. All these and other landscapes can become a stage at Supergau, an artistic field of action. Supergau is a festival that takes place exclusively outdoors.

The biennial festival celebrated its premiere in Flachgau in 2021 and transformed Lungau into a Supergau for contemporary arts in 2023. The festival will continue in Pinzgau in 2025.

Supergau invites artists to take time for the festival, so it facilitates residencies which offer the opportunity of working on site, researching and exchanging ideas. The whole institution, the development of a dramaturgy and the planning of content in collaboration with participants is an essential component of the festival.

This open call marks the beginning of Supergau, which culminates in the 10-day festival in late May / early June 2025.

The festival is looking for:

Artistic contributions outdoors.

Artists from various disciplines who will join them in exploring the question of what the countryside can do as an art- and as production-space, what the city cannot do and what new forms of encounter and dialogue we can create here.

Artists engaged with the questions, problems and potentials of this region.

Spatial art that can cover entire meadows, forests, lakes, squares or motorways, for example.

Cross-disciplinary works that enter into collaborations with visitors, residents, local initiatives or associations.

Mixed teams with participants from fields other than art are possible (e.g. from science, agriculture, health, education, crafts).

The total budget for the open call amounts to 220,000 Euro. The artistic directors, together with a panel of experts, will select projects from within two categories:

A: up to € 15,000.

B: up to € 30,000.

These two categories are simply a rough guide, with no details concerning quality or importance of the individual works. The above-mentioned flat-rate contributions are gross amounts, and must include fees, production and implementation costs, and travel expenses.

Supergau will also provide board and lodgings for the duration of the residencies, and invites the participating artists to stay overnight in the Lungau during the entire festival (in May/June 2024).

Deadline: 12 February 2024

More info and apply: https://www.supergau.org/en/open-call/

TORIGOYA Project is an artist-in-residence programme run by the Hirono Town in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Its aim is to promote Hirono’s recovery from the disaster through the power of contemporary art. A particular focus of the TORIGOYA Project is to increase the number of people visiting and living in Hirono Town.

The artist-in-residence programme will be based on the theme of the ‘TORIGOYA (rooster hut)’, a traditional local new year event, to add new value to the ‘TORIGOYA’ through contemporary art, thereby communicating Hirono Town’s attractions to the world.

Invited artists will stay in Hirono Town for a total of 30 days between 11 December 2023 – 15 January 2024 to research the history, climate, culture or some other factor of Hirono Town and create their own site-specific artworks in collaboration with town residents, especially youth and children as socially engaged art. Artists should also create an artwork about the process of building his/her/their site-specific artwork in some form of media till the end of February. There are no restrictions on the media. It can be a photograph or video, painting, 3D works, media art, literary work such as poem, novel or play, or musical work.

Site-specific works created during the residency will be burned (or dismantled if they cannot be burned) in the same manner as traditional TORIGOYA during the ‘Dondoyaki’ on 8 January.

100,000 yen (~635 EUR) will be provided as a provisional payment upon arrival in Hirono for various activities during the stay. The committee will cover the actual cost of materials, tools and for production up to 100,000 yen (~635 EUR). The cost of transportation from the artist’s current address to Hirono Town will be paid up to 100,000 yen (~635 EUR). Two round trips within this amount are acceptable. Accommodation is provided.

Deadline: 30 October 2023

More info and apply: https://hironotorigoya.com

From spring 2024, Spreepark Art Space will offer a residency programme for interdisciplinary artists and collectives.

The residency is offered in Eierhäuschen, a freshly renovated, historic restaurant, as a space for artistic production and sustainable and social interaction. Eierhäuschen is located in the middle of a nature reserve and in close proximity to Spreepark – a former amusement park in Berlin.

The three-month residency is an opportunity to explore in greater depth an individual question developed for this site, which includes new artistic perspectives and insights. The artistic production process should form a connection with the place and its fields of action: art - culture - nature.

Participating artists are selected by an international board of trustees once a year through an open call. The residency periods in 2024 are: 8 April - 21 June 2024, 1 July - 20 September 2024 and 30 September - 13 December 2024.

Support from Spreepark Art Space Residency includes:

Approximately three months accommodation free of charge for a maximum of 4 persons.

A flat contribution of 3600 EUR for the entire period.

A one-time reimbursement of travel costs per person to and from the residency.

There are a number of video calls running during August-October for interested applicants to ask questions.

Deadline: 16 October 2023

More info and apply: https://www.spreepark-artspace.de/en/residencies

The Norwegian Sculptors Society (Norsk Billedhoggerforening), Bodø2024 and Bodø Municipality seek five artists for KUNSTKANTEN: a new and unique outdoor exhibition arena in Bodø. In 2024 they will establish five art spots – platforms for art – that enter into dialogue with a city and a society undergoing change.

Bodø has for 70 years shared space with the military air base Bodø Main Air Station. The city has developed along the shoreline, with the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. Bodø is constantly on the move, and there will be big changes in the next decade. When the military air base closes, a new part of the city, and the Bodø of the future, will be developed. KUNSTKANTEN extends along historical and social lines: from prehistoric memories, through the city’s establishment, to reconstruction after the Second World War and recent times as ‘aeroplane city’ Bodø. KUNSTKANTEN gives artists an opportunity to engage in a dialogue about urban development, social development and identity.

KUNSTKANTEN is a unique investment in art in public space. Fresh funds have been made available in order for art to play a key role in the city’s history of change.

The project provides financial support for five new works that will be installed in September 2024. To participate in the competition, applicants send sketches and a project description explaining details for the realisation of their projects. Production funding is 350,000 NOK (~30,100 EUR) for each of the five selected works. There is also a payment of 50,000 NOK (~4300 EUR) per work for the exhibition period, which is two years. The organisers will also cover travel costs for a presentation of the sculpture locations to selected artists in October 2023, and for the opening event on 14 September 2024.

The artworks remain the property of the artists. KUNSTKANTEN is part of the programme for Bodø as a European Capital of Culture in 2024.

Deadline: 15 September 2023

More info and apply: https://www.norskbilledhoggerforening.no/kunstkanten

Guandu International Nature Art Festival: Call for Outdoor Installations (Taiwan)

Guandu Nature Park is calling for three artists with a focus on the human-nature relationship to participate in the 2023 Guandu International Nature Art Festival entitled ‘Nature, a Gift - Connection, Giving, and Exchange’. Selected artists will spend around four weeks as artists-in-residence in Guandu Nature Park and use natural or environmentally friendly materials to create artworks on-site that can convey environmental messages and raise awareness.

As the main outlet of the Taipei Basin’s water system, the Guandu Plain is a wetland that contains many biological activities and serves as a flood detention area to protect the safety of the Taipei metropolitan area. From early agricultural activities to urban development, industrial pollution, garbage crises, global warming and climate change, rising sea levels, and the decline of biodiversity, the Guandu Plain is almost a microcosm of the entire environmental issue. However, through the establishment of a conservation area, it has been transformed into a gift. Therefore, life is sustained and evolved through the gift of nature.

This year’s curatorial theme for the Guandu International Nature Art Festival, ‘Nature, a Gift - Connection, Giving, and Exchange’, is conceived as a gift to the Guandu Plain. Artists are invited to respond to this theme through their artistic creations.

The format of creation is unrestricted and may include interdisciplinary contemporary art, visual art, installation art, etc. The use of natural materials is preferred for media, and the creative process must comply with environmentally friendly principles. The works created should convey the values of habitat creation and biodiversity, the connections between the ecology, birds, and human interactions surrounding Guandu, and should trigger awareness of ecological conservation. The creative concept and presentation of the works should emphasise their artistic nature.

The residency period will run from 9 August 2023 – 11 September 2023, with artworks exhibited from 10 September – 31 December 2023.

Support provided by the festival includes an artist’s fee of NTD$ 80,000 (~2400 EUR), round-trip airfare (economy), accommodation, and materials support. Group application is allowed. However, the organiser will offer the same funding as for individuals.

Deadline: 30 June 2023

More info and apply: http://www.guandu-natureart.tw/news/488

REAKTOR: Visual Arts Residency to Produce a Site-responsive Work (Austria)

REAKTOR is a privately run transdisciplinary art institution based in Vienna. Over a total surface area of 1,200 m2, various forms of artistic expression are brought together and made accessible to the public. The focus is on film, space-defining art and music theatre, new music, jazz and experimental interpretations of contemporary music.

REAKTOR’s cross-disciplinary programme features works that are imbued with the spirit of the times. Indeed, what is still considered experimental today may well one day be perceived as timelessly permanent. That is particularly true of contemporary art. The REAKTOR’s call for concepts is designed to seek out that very potential in the visual arts, hence the title Potenziale. Particular emphasis is to be placed on space-defining art for the REAKTOR’s architectural core, i.e. its main hall.

The chosen artists will be invited to further develop their concept and to plan its practical implementation and realisation supported by REAKTOR’s team. The resulting work of art will be showcased to the public within an exhibition or other suiting format of presentation in February 2024.

Rejmyre Art Lab: Production Residency on the Theme of ‘Refuging’ (Sweden)

How does a factory town that produces glass become a factory town that produces refuge?

Rejmyre Art Lab invites artists from fine, performing and craft backgrounds, who are engaged with conceptual and contextual practices, to participate in a funded eight-week, production-based residency in Rejmyre, Sweden, in the spring and summer of 2023. Rejmyre has, since 2009, played host to a long-term, place-based, artistic research project with a focus on site-responsive practice.

Rejmyre itself is located amongst the forests and lakes two hours southwest of Stockholm. With a population of approximately 1000, Rejmyre is a small factory town centred around the Reijmyre Glasbruk, a glass factory founded in 1810 and still in operation.

One of the Rejmyre Art Lab’s primary research themes has, since 2018, been refuging: an exploration of how giving/taking refuge, as an act and practice, can be developed and facilitated through multiple artistic interactions and interventions. The theme has been developed by the project’s research leader Daniel Peltz, who, together with artistic director Sissi Westerberg, will introduce the theme and projects developed thus far during the residency.

The residency itself consists of a funded eight week working period, with six weeks on site in Rejmyre:

One week of Ensemble Residency: 24-30 April 2023.

Individual research and production on site in Rejmyre: 1 May - 5 June 2023.

Reflection and post-production, off site: two weeks of work spread out over the summer and autumn of 2023.

Applications are invited from artists, working in any medium, who are interested in engaging their practices in exploring the research topic of ‘refuging’. International and Nordic/Baltic artists receive a participation stipend of 24,000 SEK, material/production stipend up to 12,500 SEK, travel stipend, housing in Rejmyre (individual bedrooms with shared bathroom and shared communal spaces), shared production space in historic early 20th century factory buildings with the possibility of individual (bookable) space, and 1 communal lunch per week.

Deadline: 31 January 2023

More info and apply: https://www.rejmyreartlab.org/residency/production-residency-open-call

G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize (Greece)

The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation invites applications from Greek and international artists for the 2023 Art Prize.

The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Art Prize was established in 2019, and is a culmination of the foundation’s thirty-year long efforts to strengthen contemporary artistic leadership and innovation. It supports contemporary artists by offering them the opportunity to create a site-specific artwork that will not only become part of the foundation’s collection, but will join an important cultural heritage as well.

For the first time, in 2023, three equal prizes will be awarded. This year’s Art Prize calls for site-specific, large-scale wall-mounted works created to be part of a specific, configured environment; works which narrate an internal path/route; and which can be reference points-landmarks within their exhibition space. The selected works will be presented to the public in June 2023, will remain on permanent display at Minos Palace, in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, and will become part of the collection of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation.

The 2023 Art Prize calls for visual artists of the following fields: painting, sculpture, sound and sculptural installation, mixed media, printmaking, digital art, photographic print, ink print, video, installation, and drawing. Particular emphasis is placed on the theme of care/eudaimonia.

Each of the three selected proposals will be awarded the amount of 7000 euros, and an additional 7000 euros will be made available to each artist for the construction of the work. The artists will have 3 months at their disposal to create the awarded work and send it to Crete for installation. The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation will cover the shipping costs, as well as one return ticket to Crete for each of the winning artists, and their accommodation and meals at Minos Palace.

Deadline: 10 January 2023

More info and apply: https://gnamamidakisfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/gnamf_art_prize_2023_open_call_EN_updated.pdf

CROSS Residence announces the seventh edition of the international CROSS Award with the special edition COLLATERALE, conceived for the territory of Ameno and Lake Orta in line with the ‘Quadriborgo’ project financed by the PNRR. The call is addressed to artists and companies in the field of performance practices, with a focus on the production of innovative formats, centred on the relationship between corporeity and territory, understood as landscape and as community.

COLLATERALE stands as an incubator of imaginaries and practices committed to the rewriting of the present and the re-inhabitation of public space, understanding artistic creation as a way of researching and intervening on reality.

The selected projects and residencies:

Will necessarily be held in naturalistic outdoor environments / will be allocated indoor coworking spaces with tables, chairs, internet connections or for rehearsals in case of bad weather.

They will have to include research for specific environments: the body of water, the wood, the rural village and adapt to the geographical and civic morphology of Ameno and its surroundings (Lake Orta territory).

Should concern body practices, movement research or audio research.

In particular, projects should be inspired by certain fundamental values (sensitivity to social justice, sustainability, a critical approach to anthropocentrism, respect for the environment and attention to climate transition).

The residencies will take place in Ameno and surroundings (Lake Orta area) over the two-year period 2023-2024, during May-June and October-November.

The call for proposals is open to individual artists, professionals and companies. The submitted project may be developed during the residency phase (minimum 14 days), encompassing different expressive practices (e.g. dance, choreography, performance, sound walks, soundscape composition, sound sculptures, field recording, collective listening, musical composition and performance, participatory workshop, new technologies, motion-capture, site-specific design).

During the residency period the organisation will cover accommodation costs for the entire period for a maximum of 5 people. A fee of between €2000 and €6000 per residency project will be paid as a cachet and to cover production costs during the residency phase, travel costs and food.

Deadline: 18 January 2023

More info and apply: https://www.crossproject.it/en/call-cross-award-2022/

Les Jardins d’Étretat in Normandy, France is calling for applications for an art residency in the spring of 2023. The participants are invited to create a site-specific installation that will take place in the topiary space of the Gardens from May 2023 to December 2024 on the cliff of the Alabaster Coast.

The residency is open to visual artists, architects and collectives of multidisciplinary artists residing in Europe. Authors working on site-specific projects and land art, as well as with immersive and interactive practices, are particularly welcome to apply.

Successful candidates will be hosted at the Roxelane Villa and have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local context right in the heart of Les Jardins d’Étretat. The famous view of the Amont cliff on the English Channel and the arch in the bay of Étretat have inspired masters of Impressionism, writers Guy de Maupassant and Maurice Leblanc, composer Jacques Offenbach, and many others. The residency invites artists to interpret the encounter between the contemporary garden, its architecture, philosophy and history of the site, its natural and artistic heritage, and express it in their final work. The installation will be seen by more than 100,000 viewers visiting Les Jardins d’Étretat each year.

The selected candidates will benefit from:

Full board accommodation at the Roxelane Villa for 3 weeks (between March and May 2023).

Transfer from/ to Paris (train ticket + car journey to Étretat).

Travel to the surrounding areas of Étretat to carry out artist-led research as part of the preparation of the project (once a week at the request of the artist).

Production budget for the in situ installation is capped at 12,000 Euros. (Production fees can be used for travel with the agreement of the organisers.)

The artists are expected to plan their activities during the residency taking into account weekly meetings with local actors and audiences. During research-gathering and project planning, the artist is expected to liaise with the team of Les Jardins d’Étretat on site and become familiar with the garden’s rhythm of life: change of seasons, rain and watering, influence of wind, etc. This research will culminate in the delivery of an installation with the artist being present at the opening.

Deadline: 30 December 2022

More info and apply: https://etretatgarden.fr/en/artresidency/

Métropole Rouen Normandie is teaming up with ONF to host the Forêt Monumentale exhibition. This event is a two-year art exhibition that takes the form of a trail of monumental artworks, to be created in the Roumare Forest.

This unique trail of several kilometres offers visitors an opportunity to visit this remarkable natural habitat, or to see it from a different angle. It invites them to explore a stretch of woodland dotted with pieces created by plastic artists, landscapers, artists, designers and architects who have plunged themselves into these green lungs to experiment with new art forms.

The second Forêt Monumentale exhibition will open in June 2024 in the Roumare forest in Canteleu, near Rouen. It will end in 2026.

This call for creations will select a total of 9 artworks for installation in the forest along a 4-kilometre trail at various sites. A first phase will see around 20 candidates selected for a grant of 2000 EUR to elaborate their proposals. The final 9 projects will then be chosen to each receive 25,000 EUR to produce and then install their artwork between November 2023 – June 2024.

This call for creations is open to professionals and students of all creative disciplines: French and international artists, designers, architects, landscapers, performers, plastic artists, graphic designers, etc. Participants may be individuals or groups.

Deadline: 27 February 2023

More info and apply: http://www.laforetmonumentale.fr/en

Deadline: 6 January 2023

More info and apply: https://www.ciup.fr/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Appel-a-candidatures-Jardins-du-monde-en-mouvement-2023.pdf

Throughout the project timeline, youth work in collaboration with community members and Beam Staff to complete aspects of the projects.
