Urbane Künste Ruhr: Artist Residency, 'Healing Complex' (Germany)

Urbane Künste Ruhr in Bochum invites artists who are interested in working with local networks and public meeting places to take part in a three-month residency (April – June 2024) for its upcoming 2024 season. The residency is part of the Healing Complex project. Two positions will be allocated for the residency. Interested artists can apply individually or jointly; applications from collectives are also very welcome.

Since 3 June 2022, Urbane Künste Ruhr has been running the project Healing Complex (2018–ongoing) in Gelsenkirchen, which was initiated by the artist Irena Haiduk based on the model of antique building complexes that combined art and healing. Irena Haiduk’s artistic practice links the symbolic capital of the art field with real economies, which is particularly relevant in a post-industrial region such as the Ruhr area.

The residency at the Healing Complex offers the opportunity to intensively explore the project, the existing networks and the urban-social context in Gelsenkirchen Erle over a period of twelve weeks. The stay is divided into two phases: the first six weeks lend themselves to an examination of the location and offer the opportunity to use the Healing Complex for research and as a studio in order to develop a situation-specific project. This conception phase is followed by a six-week implementation period, during which the previously conceived project is to be realised on-site and addressed to a broad public.

Based on the results of the first two exhibition phases at the Healing Complex in 2022 and 2023, the guest artist residency offers the option of exploring forms of networks and testing the opening and activation of artistic institutions and urban spaces. However, the Healing Complex is just as well suited for an examination of the architecture of the modern church building, which was erected in 1963, as well as the history of the Erle district, whose origins are shaped by mining.

The guest artist residency is aimed at professionally working international and national artists and collectives who are interested in social, situational and site-specific contexts in their artistic work.

The residency offers:

A work and production residency from 2 April – 30 June 2024 with content supervision and close ties to Urbane Künste Ruhr.

A guest artist’s fee of €4500 gross.

Accommodation in Gelsenkirchen will be provided.

Costs for arrival and departure will be covered once.

Travel by public transport for research purposes can be reimbursed.

Shared use of the office space on site (Cranger Straße 338, 45891 Gelsenkirchen).

Deadline: 5 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.urbanekuensteruhr.de/en/news/open-call-zu-gast-im-healing-complex

Vogelklang Soundcamp Festival: Production Residencies (Germany)

The organisation Kunstverein Global Forest in St. Georgen, Germany is looking to award two project-based, 2-3 month artist residencies for research and artistic production. The residencies will take place after individual arrangements between February - early May 2024. The results of the residencies will be presented to the public at the annual Vogelklang Soundcamp on 4 and 5 May 2024.

The Vogelklang Soundcamp is a locally and independently organised event which is also linked to a global network of different actors. It aims to explore the behaviour and habitat of our feathered friends through art and creative contributions. The event was inspired by environmentalist and broadcaster Chris Baines and is part of the International Dawn Chorus Day, which he founded. Over the course of the festival weekend, May 6-7, various temporary sound camps around the world will connect to form one global acoustic network. Through the cooperation of all sound camps, including the Vogelklang Soundcamp in the Black Forest, a 24-hour livestream of continuous morning chirping is created. Thus, along the sunrise a worldwide phenomenon can be experienced: the morning song of the birds.

In addition to the 24-hour bird concert produced collectively by the many sound camps, an on-site and transmedia festival programme will take place in the realm of the Vogelklang Soundcamp in the Black Forest. This includes workshops, lectures, installations, performances, etc. – many of which are interactive and designed for participation.

The two residencies are intended to enable artists to develop a project- and theme-related work and to present it at the Vogelklang Soundcamp. During the production process, the artists will be supported by the Global Forest team. Generally, all artistic media that can be realised within the framework of the festival are welcome. The work should show a special perspective on or direct engagement with nature – in particular with birds or topics from this context. Sociopolitical issues can be individually and artistically in focus. At the core of the Vogelklang Soundcamp is the attempt and claim to assign subjectivity to nature and to engage with it as a biopolitical agent.

Both residencies include a rent-free stay at Kunstverein Global, a scholarship of 1000€ per month, the reimbursement of material costs up to max. 500€, the reimbursement of travel costs up to max. 250€, as well as free food and accommodation during the Vogelklang Soundcamp.

Deadline: 10 December 2023

More info and apply: https://global-forest.com/programm/open-call-vogelklang-soundcamp-7

Schaufler Lab@TU Dresden, launched in 2019, was initiated with the goal of exploring and elucidating the complex relationships among humans, machines, technology and the world from the perspective of the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Lab consists of the two pillars Schaufler Kolleg@TU Dresden (a research training group) and Schaufler Residency@TU Dresden.

The first funding phase (2020-2024) focused on Artificial Intelligence as factor and consequence of societal and cultural change.

Chemnitz and 38 partner municipalities and communities in the Central Saxony, Erzgebirge and Zwickau region will be the European Capital of Culture 2025, with the motto ‘C the Unseen’.

European city life takes place on streets, in clubs, meeting places, studios, in backyards, in (skate)parks, kickabout pitches, roofs, in clubhouses, allotment gardens, schools, retirement homes, nurseries and many other places yet to be discovered.

Chemnitz’s very own special city culture has developed in various places over the decades. The Capital of Culture year 2025 aims to give a wide range of initiatives the opportunity to present their activities to a broad public. Open Call Nr. 05/23 – Urban popular culture closes a gap between the programme of arts and culture and popular culture in Chemnitz. Through the project submissions, stakeholders of European, contemporary popular culture who as yet enjoy very little visibility in the city’s public life will become perceptible.

Each selected local project must demonstrate at least one European partner and each project from abroad must involve a local partner from Chemnitz or one of the 38 partner municipalities or communities.

Project costs incurred during the term of the project in the form of professional fees and material costs for research and travel expenses, accommodation costs, seminar and conference fees, entrance fees, translation costs and material costs will be reimbursed up to a maximum of €5,000 for project development processes and up to a maximum of €30,000 for larger district projects, subject to approval by KHS GmbH.

Deadline: 3 December 2023

More info and apply: https://chemnitz2025.de/en/allgemein/opencall/

Between Bridges Residency for Visual Artists (Germany)

Between Bridges is pleased to announce the open call for the next two biannual residencies for visual artists. One residency will take place from January to June 2024, the other from July to December 2024. They will each be divided into a five-month working phase and a one-month exhibition or public presentation. The upcoming recipients will follow artist and filmmaker Yalda Afsah (first half of 2023) and the collective Viscose (second half of 2023).

The residency is suitable for professional individual visual artists, artist duos or small groups working collaboratively. One or more visual artists will be supported, though artists enrolled at a university at the time of application are not eligible to apply (excluding artists enrolled in PhD programs). The criteria for awarding the residency is primarily the quality of the application and work submitted.

The residency includes the use of the facilities at Keithstraße 15 in Berlin Schöneberg on the ground floor of a residential building, with Wittenbergplatz subway station located nearby. The organisers regret that the rooms are not yet wheelchair accessible or suitable for living.

The residency includes a monthly stipend of 1500 EUR. It also offers the opportunity for studio visits with arts professionals from the network of Between Bridges. For the exhibition, a production budget will be granted. The exhibition connected to the first residency in 2024 will open at the end of April during Gallery Weekend Berlin. The exhibition connected to the second residency in 2024 will take place end of the year.

Deadline: 21 October 2023

More info and apply: https://www.betweenbridges.net/foundation/residency

In 2023, the Ministry of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate will for the first time award the Carl Zuckmayer Scholarship to promote contemporary European drama and the memory of the political German playwright Carl Zuckmayer.

The scholarship is addressed to playwrights living in Europe who have already written at least one theatre play that has been staged already. The working scholarship is intended to enable them to write a play on a socially relevant, European topic with financial security. A jury of five decides on the award of the scholarship.

The resulting works should be in the tradition of Zuckmayer’s cosmopolitan spirit and shed new light on his thematic fields such as homeland, exile, resistance and the genre of the critical folk play in a European present. The Staatstheater Mainz, which frequently collaborates with playwrights for world premieres, will organise the tendering process and accompany the playwrights in their development.

The theatre festival PLUG&PLAY at the Staatstheater Mainz, with its focus on young directors, sees itself as a lively working forum, meeting place and open space for exchange about contemporary theatre. It thus provides the ideal setting for the annual public awarding of the scholarship as well as a reading of the previous year’s play within the festival programme. The first awarding of the Carl Zuckmayer Scholarship will take place on 09 May 2024 at the opening of the PLUG&PLAY Festival.

The scholarship includes:

10,000 EUR grant.

Supervision by the dramaturgy of the Staatstheater Mainz

Assumption of the costs for travel and accommodation for a maximum of three stays in Mainz (by arrangement).

Option of the world premiere of the play at the Staatstheater Mainz.

Deadline: 30 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.staatstheater-mainz.com/web/content/02-veranstaltungen/06-extras-23-24/11-carl-zuckmayer-stipendium/carl-zuckmayer-scholarship-_call-for-application.pdf

zusa: ‘What’s Next?’ Residencies for Artists and Cultural Professionals (Germany)

The cultural and civil society organisation zusa is organising residencies in Berlin in the framework of ‘What’s next?’ which will focus on two thematic axes:

Reflection and re-thinking on the idea of solidarity in Europe.

Mental well-being of artists and cultural professionals.

Residents will be encouraged to explore possible interrelations between those two seemingly distant topics. The residencies will be dedicated to experimenting, collaborating, exchanging, and exploring what kind of micro-utopian interaction art may propose in reaching solidarity. How does solidarity look in culture and what is its future in the face of continuing crises affecting the world? Can supporting the mental well-being of arts professionals become a driving force for the future of solidarity in culture?

Six artists and one curator or researcher or culture manager will be invited to spend time in Berlin between February and April 2024. Since not all the artists will meet during the residency, the curator / researcher / culture manager will team up with an invited local curator to interconnect and build a bridge between residencies.

During the residencies artists and cultural professionals will be asked to work on reflection diaries on the residency topic. The form for the diary will be a free choice – e.g. notes, sketches, short videoart, sound recording, etc. Other than that, the residents will be expected to prepare two small-scale meetings / events for a community of artists, culture managers, researchers and friends gathered around the AiR zusa programme, zusa and MitOst networks. The form of the meetings will be decided by residents together.

The residents will also be offered networking opportunities with the Berlin local culture scene, as well as external mental health support in the form of individual sessions and group circles which are a fixed component of the residency programme in the zusa organisation. There will be a possibility to slow down and take a break in nature in Brandeburg.

zusa offers residents:

A monthly stipend of 1000 EUR, accommodation (in an individual room) in Berlin and travel costs reimbursement up to 200 EUR.

A safer and supportive environment, where they can work without fear of discrimination or harassment.

Access to zusa’s network (Berlin & international);

There is the possibility to come to the residency with family. The resident will be responsible for covering the family members’ travel costs. The additional fellowship will be offered (1 child = 200 EUR, 2 children = 300 EUR).

The residency is dedicated to artists and cultural professionals based in European countries but with focus on Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Austria, and Germany. The priority will be given to the following disciplines: visual arts, architecture, music, literature. However, zusa allow for the possibility of extending the group to other disciplines.

Deadline: 26 October 2023

More info and apply: https://zusaculture.org/whats-next-residency-open-call-for-artists-and-cultural-professionals/

PACT Zollverein: IMPACT23 ‘Ecologies of Attention’ (Germany)

Initiated in 2004, PACT’s yearly interactive symposium IMPACT invites artists, practitioners, theoreticians and advanced students from the fields of dance, theatre, performance, visual arts, new media, film, music, architecture and other extended practices in art and science, to engage with various research interests, working methods and artistic strategies. IMPACT23 will take place from 8-12 November 2023 with the theme ‘Ecologies of Attention’.

In the interactions between humans, animals, plants, and things, in ecosystems and in the technosphere, pervasive patterns of perception are at work. Such patterns are influenced by assumptions, interests, projections, framings, and selections. What powerful phenomena, forces, connections and exchange relations remain hidden or obscured as a result? What methods, tools, strategies, or systems are required to reevaluate these connections and foster productive relationships? Which ingrained patterns need to be disrupted?

IMPACT23 provides space for transdisciplinary approaches and the creation of solidarity connections that can enable alternative ecologies of attention.

With the call for proposals, the organisers welcome suggestions, ideas and possibilities for action arising from artistic, social, physical, technological, and ecological practices, whether actual or speculative, that engage with various forms of appreciating complex processes and making them visible. The call is aimed at practitioners and theorists from the fields of the performing and visual arts, science, journalism, technology, activism, social work and architecture.

The four-day symposium is based on the selected contributions and is complemented by keynote lectures, workshops and artistic interventions. Participants receive a remuneration of 250€, travel costs, and accommodation.

Deadline: 29 September 2023

More info and apply: https://www.pact-zollverein.de/en/platforms/impact

From spring 2024, Spreepark Art Space will offer a residency programme for interdisciplinary artists and collectives.

The residency is offered in Eierhäuschen, a freshly renovated, historic restaurant, as a space for artistic production and sustainable and social interaction. Eierhäuschen is located in the middle of a nature reserve and in close proximity to Spreepark – a former amusement park in Berlin.

The three-month residency is an opportunity to explore in greater depth an individual question developed for this site, which includes new artistic perspectives and insights. The artistic production process should form a connection with the place and its fields of action: art - culture - nature.

Participating artists are selected by an international board of trustees once a year through an open call. The residency periods in 2024 are: 8 April - 21 June 2024, 1 July - 20 September 2024 and 30 September - 13 December 2024.

Support from Spreepark Art Space Residency includes:

Approximately three months accommodation free of charge for a maximum of 4 persons.

A flat contribution of 3600 EUR for the entire period.

A one-time reimbursement of travel costs per person to and from the residency.

There are a number of video calls running during August-October for interested applicants to ask questions.

Deadline: 16 October 2023

More info and apply: https://www.spreepark-artspace.de/en/residencies

Call for Papers for Conference ‘Thinking Techne’ (Germany)

What does it mean to think about artistic processes? How do they manifest themselves in artifacts, what meaning do they generate, how are they negotiated in texts and images as well as themselves charged with meaning? What methods are used in the disciplines of philology, art history, and the history of science to investigate the practices, experiences, and skills of artists? What parameters are relevant to these investigations, and what approaches are being developed to address them?

The international conference ‘Thinking techne’, taking place at the Technische Universität Berlin from 2-4 November 2023, will explore these questions. At the same time, it takes stock of the work of the DFG research group ‘Dimensions of techne in the Fine Arts - Manifestations / Systems / Narratives’, which investigates the complex interplay of material, form, and art-technical knowledge in its various manifestations.

Deliberately, the conference is not conceived in the classical format of consecutive lectures, but in a dialogical form. Interdisciplinary conversations will outline possible methodological perspectives for three thematic areas, each consisting of a keynote address and a panel discussion: Material / Materiality; Aesthetics of Processuality; and Definitions, Systematics, and Orders.

Researchers at all experience levels are invited to apply to participate in the panel discussions to contribute their perspectives based on their individual research and discipline. The 90-minute panel discussions will be structured by a series of pre-established questions and will be explored in advance in collaborative Zoom sessions. The conference organisers offer reimbursement of travel and accommodation costs. Early Career Researchers and advanced students can also apply for a travel grant to attend the conference.

Deadline: 25 August 2023

More info and apply: https://techne.hypotheses.org/3629
