In 2022, La Nature Festival entered a three-year thematic cycle called ‘Immersio’. Its aim is to follow the flow of nature and its impact on the evolution of organic matter, the biological phenomena, from photosynthesis to decomposition and all the steps in between.

This year, the festival will tackle the final stage of the cycle, named Mycelium. It has two calls – one for projects that respond to this theme and another open call for projects that are not thematically connected to it.

In both cases they are looking for projects that are particularly relevant to the following disciplines:

Artistic Performance

of which purpose is not only musical (dance, happenings, improvisation, body art, theatre… this list is not exhaustive);

the intervention can happen on- or off-stage, spatially fixed or mobile;

cannot be hosted inside a building;

has to be adapted to the Belgian weather.

Artistic Installation

contemplative and/or conceptual and/or interactive.

The festival offers:

Several budget packages ranging from 250 EUR to 3000 EUR will be granted and should include all costs (travel, material, production, wages).

Accommodation on the festival site (tent, dormitory) if needed.

Deadline: 1 March 2024

More info and apply: https://www.lanature.be/call-for-projects/

V&A: The Parasol Foundation Prize for Women in Photography (UK)

The V&A Parasol Foundation Prize for Women in Photography is an exciting new annual initiative dedicated to identifying, supporting, and championing innovative women artists working in the field of contemporary photography.

The V&A Parasol Foundation Prize for Women in Photography is free to enter, open to all women internationally, both professionals and amateurs. The Prize is subject to a specific annual theme and winners are selected by an independent selection panel consisting of global industry professionals and inspiring international artists.

The 2024 theme for the Prize is ‘Histories’. This theme invites broad submissions which evidence the relationship between history and photography; from the use of historical processes and their position within contemporary photographic practice, to the documentation of historical events or revisitations of the past. It creates space for artists interested in the notion of the archive, including photographers working with family albums, vernacular photography and historic or institutional collections. ‘Histories’ invites artists to consider how photography can be used to interrogate and challenge existing history, fact and circumstance, allowing for reimagined or speculative futures.

Four winning artists will have their work included in a group exhibition at Peckham 24 photography festival, alongside accompanying events and public programming. Each artist will receive a bursary of £2,000 and an expenses-paid trip (travel and accommodation) to London to participate in scheduled networking events in May 2024 designed to support career development.

Deadline: 4 January 2024

More info and apply: https://parasol-prize.vam.ac.uk

The Nantes Institute for Advanced Study, is establishing a new fellowship in ‘Arts, Societies and Contemporary Mutations’. In this context, the IEA in collaboration with local partners, Lieu Unique, the Nantes Saint-Nazaire School of Fine Arts and Nantes Métropole, is offering an international artistic and research residency to artists from the global south. This residency, supported by Nantes Métropole – Culture Department, will run for 6 months from 10 September 2024 – 10 March 2025.

The chair supports the development of research in art that dialogues with the humanities and social sciences in order to question the contemporary mutations of our societies. By considering artistic practices in terms of research, the residency participates in the emergence of new research territories (practices and forms, working methods, production regimes, etc.) exploring, through the crossing of disciplines, societal and environmental changes. It engages methodological questions and reflections on the nature of the knowledge incorporated, produced, and transmitted by these practices.

This residency is open to professional artists living and working in the Global South. More precisely, the organisers are targeting artists whose nationality and residency are situated in the southern hemisphere excepting Australia, New-Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Guyane. Applicants are expected to have at least five years of professional experience at the time of the start of their residency, which should be supported through their active participation in public life, the dissemination of their work in an appropriate format such as exhibitions, publications, performances, etc.

The artist will receive a remuneration and benefits package that includes:

A monthly stipend that includes time spent in the workshops with the students (2000 € per month).

13 working days of authorised absence (10% of the total duration of the fellowship).

Free accommodation.

Free use of office space and access to library services.

Insurance (75€ per month).

Production costs (up to €2000).

Visa and return ticket from the domicile.

Deadline: 15 December 2023

More info and apply: https://www.iea-nantes.fr/en/news/call-for-applications_1341

BJCEM: ‘Beyond Boundaries’ Residency (Italy)

Beyond Boundaries is a 21-day intensive residency programme, running 10-31 January 2024, and supported by Municipality of Milan – Fabbrica del Vapore, Ministry of Culture of Montenegro, Clube Portugues de Artes e Ideias, Fluks – Centre for Young Art, UKNA – UK New Artists, Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of Cyprus and developed in collaboration with BJCEM – Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean.

Fabbrica del Vapore is an important Milanese hub of creativity and innovation. The residency will be organised in this direction, giving the venue a strong connotation of a welcome place, an incubator of new ideas where an exchange among the artists of the residency, the curator and the place will make it possible to carry on research, new artistic practices, and peer to peer learning.

Taking the cue from the research of A Natural Oasis? – the BJCEM two-year nomadic free school dedicated to the development of new curatorial research paths in the field of contemporary, visual, and performing arts – Beyond Boundaries aims to foster the artistic practices of those territories, which are commonly considered remote, marginal, small, insular or liminal.

The call is open to artists who work in visual arts, applied arts, new media, photography, and performance. To be eligible, candidates must be under 35 (born after 1987) and come from or be based in the following territories: Portugal, Norway, UK, Montenegro, Municipality of Milan, Cyprus.

Each selected artist will receive a participation fee of 300 Euro; a production fee of 350 Euro; and a total per diem of 300 Euro. The non-resident selected artists will be provided a round ticket from and to the city indicated in the application form, covered by the partner of reference, and the Municipality of Milan will guarantee them accommodation in the facilities of Fabbrica Del Vapore.

Deadline: 12 December 2023

More info and apply: https://www.bjcem.org/2023/11/22/open-call-beyond-boundaries/

Matadero Madrid: Curatorial Residency in Collaboration with LOOP Barcelona (Spain)

Matadero’s Centre for Artists in Residence and LOOP, through an agreement with Fabra i Coats: Fábrica de Creación y Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica, are promoting a call for entries to provide a curator from any country of origin with a work space, funding, institutional support and international visibility. Given that the purpose of the residency is to get to know the artistic contexts of Madrid and Barcelona, applications from curators who live in either city will not be accepted.

The residency is split into two periods; an initial stage during the month of May 2024 in Barcelona accompanied and managed by LOOP in collaboration with Fabra i Coats: Fábrica de Creación y Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica, and a second stage during the month of June 2024 in Madrid, managed by the Matadero Centre for Artists in Residence. As a result of the residency, the curator will schedule two sessions during the first quarter of 2025, exact dates to be confirmed, as part of the Video Tuesdays programme at the Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica.

Thus, the aim of this initiative is to:

Promote the professional development of art curators.

Provide curators who are interested in the local context with institutional support and spatial and economic resources to facilitate their research.

Establish a context of backing and training so that the purpose of the residency sees the light of day in the best possible conditions.

Establish connections between the various players in the city’s art scene, the institution and the public.

Visibilisation and internationalisation of the selected curator’s work through the presentation of the research developed during the residency, materialised in a collaboration in Video Tuesdays programme of the Centre d’Arts Santa Mònica in the first quarter of 2025, as well as in public activities aimed at this purpose both at the Matadero Madrid Art Residency Center and within the framework of LOOP.

Support includes coverage of travel and accommodation for the residency and a payment of 3000 EUR.

Deadline: 8 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.mataderomadrid.org/en/calls/curatorial-residency-collaboration-loop-barcelona-0

Art Hub Copenhagen: Visual Arts Residency (Denmark)

As an institution, Art Hub Copenhagen aims to create networks. The Art Hub Residency therefore actively aims to create and expand artists’ networks both nationally and internationally.

Focusing on networking, contemplation, and production, Art Hub Residency features a studio, a monthly fee, a production budget, and a programme of development and feedback based on the needs of each artist. The programme features meetings with selected curators/mentors and a programme of visits to selected art institutions in Denmark.

As well as the importance of networking, Art Hub Residency provides artists with time for contemplation and/or production. There is no requirement to produce work during the residency; the time can thus be tailored to suit the process of each artist. It might involve research and studies, trying out ideas, or actual production. There is also the option of a short stay at the Danish Art Workshops.

Art Hub Residency is both for recently graduated artists and other artists, for whom the residency programme could make a difference in terms of establishing and expanding their practice nationally and internationally. The residency lasts for five months from February to June 2024.

Alongside studio space and mentoring, artists receive a fee of DKK 15,000 per month (~2000 EUR) and a production fee of DKK 20,000 (~2700 EUR).

Applications are open to graduated artists who are EU/EØS citizens or either in possession of a permanent residence permit or entitled in some other way to reside in Denmark for a period of five months.

Deadline: 22 November 2023

More info and apply: https://arthubcopenhagen.net/en/open-call-art-hub-residency-spring-2023/

Artworks (both digital and physical ones) will become the tangible results of the two-year residency programme that includes for each island:

Improve their skills using digital technologies and digital media in the creative process.

Be trained on innovative and sustainable methods applied to creative processes.

The project covers round trips from European cities, boards and lodging costs for the in-person activities. It also provides some support for production costs, and stipends varying from 2000 – 3500 EUR.

Culture Moves Europe is the permanent mobility scheme funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut.

The scheme is composed of two action lines:

Individual mobility for artists and cultural professionals.

Residencies for host organisations.

This call is addressed to residency hosts that are legal entities based in one of the 40 Creative Europe countries. The purpose of the grant is to welcome international artists and cultural professionals at your premises to implement a residency project. The participating artists and cultural professionals must be legal residents in a Creative Europe country that is different from the host’s country.

Residency hosts should be active in one or more of the following sectors:

Architecture.

Cultural heritage.

Design and fashion design.

Literature.

Music.

Performing arts.

Visual arts.

What is the residency action for?

The residency project should pursue one or two of the following objectives:

To explore: To conduct research, to investigate and work on a specific theme or a new concept.

To create: To engage in a collective creative process seeking to produce a new piece of artistic/cultural work.

To learn: To enhance the participants’ competences through non-formal learning or collaboration with a specialist.

To connect: To develop a network, to strengthen the participants’ professional development.

To transform: To enable societal change in line with the New European Bauhaus values and principles.

You can welcome between 1 and 5 international artists and cultural professionals who must all participate in the residency project on the same dates and for the same duration. The residency can last between 22 and 300 days.

When applying, you must choose one of the following durations:

Short-term residency project: between 22 and 60 days.

Long-term residency project: between 121 and 300 days.

Support

The residency grant contributes to the costs connected to hosting international artists and cultural professionals and their mobility. This includes housing costs (fixed €35 per day), a mobility grant covering a travel allowance (€350 for distances between 601-5000km, €700 for 5001km+) and daily allowance (€25 per day), and various top-up allowances that support green travel and the participation of Overseas Countries and Territories or Outermost Regions, disabled artists and professionals, persons with children below the age of 10, and those with visa expenses.

The space can include outdoor sports and fitness equipment, shading, projections area, charging station and green areas for the camp’s residents to socialise and release energy safely and positively.

In light of the aim to include the camp residents within the process, the final structure will be assembled in collaboration with the camp residents.

TMS will provide access to machines, tools and materials for the design, development and successful implementation of the residency project to the camp.

Applicants should be resident in a Creative Europe country (excluding Cyprus). The organisers provide a stipend of €25 / per day, a travel allowance (travel distance 600 - 5000km – €350 per participant / Travel distance from 5001km – €700 per participant), accommodation, and materials.

Between Bridges is pleased to announce the open call for the next two biannual residencies for visual artists. One residency will take place from January to June 2024, the other from July to December 2024. They will each be divided into a five-month working phase and a one-month exhibition or public presentation. The upcoming recipients will follow artist and filmmaker Yalda Afsah (first half of 2023) and the collective Viscose (second half of 2023).

The residency is suitable for professional individual visual artists, artist duos or small groups working collaboratively. One or more visual artists will be supported, though artists enrolled at a university at the time of application are not eligible to apply (excluding artists enrolled in PhD programs). The criteria for awarding the residency is primarily the quality of the application and work submitted.

The residency includes the use of the facilities at Keithstraße 15 in Berlin Schöneberg on the ground floor of a residential building, with Wittenbergplatz subway station located nearby. The organisers regret that the rooms are not yet wheelchair accessible or suitable for living.

The residency includes a monthly stipend of 1500 EUR. It also offers the opportunity for studio visits with arts professionals from the network of Between Bridges. For the exhibition, a production budget will be granted. The exhibition connected to the first residency in 2024 will open at the end of April during Gallery Weekend Berlin. The exhibition connected to the second residency in 2024 will take place end of the year.

Deadline: 21 October 2023

More info and apply: https://www.betweenbridges.net/foundation/residency

GuestRoomMaribor: ‘Constructing Care’ Residency (Slovenia)

GuestRoomMaribor invites artists and cultural professionals to apply for a research-based residency project in Maribor, Slovenia in summer 2024. The organisers welcome applications from candidates from different stages of their careers and backgrounds, with a focus on caregiving in visual arts, cultural theory, performance and curating. The residency period lasts 35 days (days of travel not included) and 5 residents will be hosted in the same period of time.

Constructing Care is a research-based residency project that aims to address the issues of the global care crisis from a local perspective. GuestRoomMaribor are inviting artists and cultural professionals to explore the local communities of care – affinity groups, day care institutions, personal carers’ unions as well as families involved in care – and to participate in knowledge production joining Maribor-based and Slovene artists, researchers, activists and socially engaged cultural practitioners. The residency also aims to foster cultural production – a new artistic work or curatorial plan. Long term plan (for 2025) is to create and present an exhibition devoted to the art of care based on the echoes of the residency Constructing Care.

Applications that address care as an intimate, personal and interpersonal act are welcome, as well as proposals that reflect on the political dimensions of the crisis of care: as the lack of appropriate state support, the link between care workers and migration, feminised labour in the care sphere, and the gender aspect of the invisible unpaid care work, etc. The project will enhance networking among the engaged artists and the local scene, to present the care community as a self-aware and empowered affinity group.

GuestRoomMaribor supports a collaborative environment through a tailored programme that encourages interdisciplinary exploration and engagement. The programme also offers professional development activities, including mentoring sessions, lectures with researchers and scholars.

Support:

Daily allowance: 25 EUR x 35 days = 875 EUR.

Travel allowance: 350 EUR or 700 EUR (350 EUR if you travel a distance under 600 km or 350 EUR + 350 EUR (top-up) if you travel a distance from 600 km to 5000 km.

Green top-up: no airplane both ways; for travel distance more than 600 km one way 350 EUR.

Visa allowance 80 EUR.

Family top-up for residents with one or more children below the age of 10 in the amount of 100 EUR.

Disability Support up to 75 EUR per day per participant with special needs linked to disability.

Free accommodation in separate units.

Curatorial and productional support.

GuestRoomMaribor will be accepting artists working in various fields of visual, performative and relational art - painting, drawing, photography, video art, graphic arts, digital arts, sculpture, site specific practices, relational aesthetics, community arts and performing arts, curation. Applicants must be legal residents of one of the Creative Europe countries beyond Slovenia.

Deadline: 10 October 2023

More info and apply: https://guestroommaribor.22slides.com/funded-residencies

zusa: ‘What’s Next?’ Residencies for Artists and Cultural Professionals (Germany)

The cultural and civil society organisation zusa is organising residencies in Berlin in the framework of ‘What’s next?’ which will focus on two thematic axes:

Reflection and re-thinking on the idea of solidarity in Europe.

Mental well-being of artists and cultural professionals.

Residents will be encouraged to explore possible interrelations between those two seemingly distant topics. The residencies will be dedicated to experimenting, collaborating, exchanging, and exploring what kind of micro-utopian interaction art may propose in reaching solidarity. How does solidarity look in culture and what is its future in the face of continuing crises affecting the world? Can supporting the mental well-being of arts professionals become a driving force for the future of solidarity in culture?

Six artists and one curator or researcher or culture manager will be invited to spend time in Berlin between February and April 2024. Since not all the artists will meet during the residency, the curator / researcher / culture manager will team up with an invited local curator to interconnect and build a bridge between residencies.

During the residencies artists and cultural professionals will be asked to work on reflection diaries on the residency topic. The form for the diary will be a free choice – e.g. notes, sketches, short videoart, sound recording, etc. Other than that, the residents will be expected to prepare two small-scale meetings / events for a community of artists, culture managers, researchers and friends gathered around the AiR zusa programme, zusa and MitOst networks. The form of the meetings will be decided by residents together.

The residents will also be offered networking opportunities with the Berlin local culture scene, as well as external mental health support in the form of individual sessions and group circles which are a fixed component of the residency programme in the zusa organisation. There will be a possibility to slow down and take a break in nature in Brandeburg.

zusa offers residents:

A monthly stipend of 1000 EUR, accommodation (in an individual room) in Berlin and travel costs reimbursement up to 200 EUR.

A safer and supportive environment, where they can work without fear of discrimination or harassment.

Access to zusa’s network (Berlin & international);

There is the possibility to come to the residency with family. The resident will be responsible for covering the family members’ travel costs. The additional fellowship will be offered (1 child = 200 EUR, 2 children = 300 EUR).

The residency is dedicated to artists and cultural professionals based in European countries but with focus on Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Austria, and Germany. The priority will be given to the following disciplines: visual arts, architecture, music, literature. However, zusa allow for the possibility of extending the group to other disciplines.

Deadline: 26 October 2023

More info and apply: https://zusaculture.org/whats-next-residency-open-call-for-artists-and-cultural-professionals/
