Music Biennale Zagreb: Call for Scores for New Ballet on Broken Relationships (Croatia)

The Music Biennale Zagreb (MBZ) opens its 33rd edition at the Croatian National Theatre with a new ballet. With this call for scores, MBZ and the Croatian Composers’ Society (HDS) are looking for music for the new ballet piece for chamber ensemble (and electronics - optional) inspired by the theme of the festival: Broken Relationships. Following this call for scores, a call for a choreographer will also be launched. The winners of the two calls will realise the project in coordination with the MBZ artistic team and Massimiliano Volpini, the director of the Ballet of the Croatian National Theatre.

The 33rd edition of the MBZ is inspired by the Upper Town Museum of Broken Relationships. The Museum of Broken Relationships is a physical and virtual space that collects, preserves and exhibits personal objects and stories of symbolic emotional value. The museum is an ever-growing collection of objects, reminders of past relationships, accompanied by personal but anonymous stories of their donors. In contrast to destructive self-help guides for coping with grief and loss, the museum offers the opportunity to creatively overcome an emotional breakdown - by participating in the museum’s universal collection.

Starting from an emotional understanding of this term, the festival extends it to cultural, social and political issues. Consequently, the theme of ‘broken relationships’ can also be understood as a broken link between different cultural actors, a broken connection with neglected architectural and cultural heritage in the city, a broken relationship between artists abroad and their home countries, but of course also beyond. Applicants can take inspiration from the above ideas in their proposal for a new work for the MBZ or question the idea of disruption, dissolution or reconnection in a completely free way.

All adult composers, regardless of age or nationality can apply, and applications can be made individually or in a team with a choreographer.

Competition conditions:

The winner undertakes to write a new original work in a duration of 20 minutes.

Instrumentation: chamber orchestra - the exact line-up TBA.

The use of electronics is possible upon prior consultation with the MBZ artistic team.

MBZ/HDS will reward the selected work with a sum of 6000€.

MBZ/HDS will also cover travel costs of up to 300€ and accommodation during the final rehearsals and the premiere (3 to 5 nights, depending on the needs of the production).

During the stay in Zagreb, the artist is expected to work on the composition with the assigned choreographer, the HNK ballet ensemble, the orchestra, the MBZ artistic direction and the rest of the MBZ/HDS team.

Deadline: 15 January 2024

More info and apply: https://www.mbz.hr/index.php?opt=item&act=mlist&id=7199&lang=en

Wiener Festwochen: Akademie Zweite Moderne Global Platform of Women Composers (Austria)

Premieres by women composers on the main stage are still celebrated exceptions. Only 2% of the works included in the concert subscription hail from women. At 9%, the average share of women in the programme reaches its peak – and that’s only in cases of explicitly contemporary concert series. If the development towards equality continues to progress at the same rate as in the past decades, an equitable future will remain a distant prospect.

The aim of Akademie Zweite Moderne (Academy of Second Modernism) is to have cultural institutions, festivals and ensembles involved in making concerts, scenic and performative arts commit themselves to increase the proportion of music that is composed by women in a significant way.

This open call is directed at womxn composers who:

Have experience composing for ensembles, orchestras or music theatre and wish to present themselves with a piece for max. 12 musicians or artists.

Are concerned with current developments and tendencies that are socially relevant.

See themselves as instigators of new, innovative forms of concert and music theatre.

Engage in a crossover of genres and/or arts (such as performance, visual art, installation, new media) with their works.

Want to develop strategies of visibility together with the other invited composers during a two-day workshop.

The piece that is to be performed within the framework of Akademie Zweite Moderne can be an existing work, a premiere or an extract from a longer work. The piece that is put forward for performance should not be longer than 20 minutes in duration.

Travel and accommodation costs will be covered, as well as an honorarium for participation in Akademie Zweite Moderne. Akademie Zweite Moderne will take place from 7-9 June 2024.

Deadline: 8 December 2023

More info and apply: https://www.festwochen.at/en/open-call-akadmie-zweite-moderne

International Touring and Environmental Responsibility Fund for Performing Arts Professionals in England, Norway and Denmark

Arts Council England are partnering with the Danish Arts Foundation and Arts Council Norway to support a third year of the International Touring and Environmental Responsibility Fund, with the aim of fostering relationships between artists and companies based in Denmark, Norway, and England, supporting them to develop new, environmentally responsible approaches to international touring and collaboration.

Travel and touring are essential to creativity and culture, but they come at a cost. As the urgency of the climate crisis increases, so does the need for our sector to fully understand its touring footprint, and to sustain a means of sharing art which supports our transition to a global low carbon future.

Working with Julie’s Bicycle, this unique programme aims to support performing arts professionals in England, Norway, and Denmark to tackle these challenges head on.

Applications are welcome from venues, touring companies and individuals across a wide range of art forms. You may, for example, be a music or theatre venue that receives touring organisations, a festival, an orchestra, a theatre company, a solo musician, a performing arts producer, or a multidisciplinary arts organisation.

Beginning in February 2024, selected artists and companies (eight based in England, eight based in Denmark, eight based in Norway) will benefit from a three-month interactive online programme exploring key touring challenges, with provocations, frameworks, and practical approaches to reducing their carbon and environmental impacts. Led by Julie’s Bicycle, with input from guest speakers, this online climate leadership course will inspire participants to collaborate with one another to shape concepts that explore new approaches to international touring and collaboration.

Following the online programme, participants will be invited to apply for project funding in partnership with one another to seed fund concepts originating from the programme. Concepts could include, for example, creating artistic content, exploring new models of presentation or distribution, or research and development.

The successful partnerships will be awarded up to £30,000 (for trilateral partnerships representing all three countries) or up to £20,000 (for bilateral partnerships representing only two of the countries) and announced in May 2024 with projects commenced in September 2024.

Deadline: 30 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.artscouncil.org.uk/our-open-funds/international-touring-and-environmental-responsibility-fund/international-touring-and-environmental-responsibility-fund-round-three

LIVEMX: Call for Projects from Music Organisations

Supported by Music Moves Europe, LIVEMX aims to nurture a more diverse and sustainable music sector through dedicated funding designed to answer some specific needs of the European music ecosystem in three specific areas. This programme aims to help music organisations and professionals to develop and strengthen their skills, abilities, processes and resources to adapt and thrive in such a dynamic industry.

LIVEMX focuses on three specific topics:

Music export (encompassing three challenges: developing music export through co-creation; promoting new music and artists abroad in innovative ways; and developing professional networks and understanding of new markets).

Live music venues (challenges: develop artists’ circulation in Europe; develop ecological solutions adapted to the live music sector; develop new audience strategies).

Digital circulation and engagement.

To be an eligible applicant, proposals must be presented by a single applicant (mono-beneficiary) that meets the following rules:

Be a public or private organisation with legal personality.

Be established in one of the 27 EU Member States or non-EU countries, on the date of the publication of the call, part of the Creative Europe Programme.

Be established at least one year before the application submission date.

Have a demonstrable track-record of working in the sector that is relevant in the context of their proposal (live music venues, music export or digital solutions that can be applied to the music sector).

Project grants are organised into three strands of 20,000, 40,000 or 60,000 EUR.

Deadline: 6 January 2024

More info and apply: https://livemx.eu/open-calls-for-projects/

Music Biennale Zagreb, a festival of contemporary music, is looking for new collaborators for the organisation and production of the 33rd edition of the festival in 2025: an executive director and a producer.

If you like new challenges, are ready to expand your knowledge and skills, manage well in the busy festival life, and at the same time are communicative, organised, love teamwork, and have experience in the creative and cultural industry, send your application and become a key part of the MBZ team.

Music Biennale Zagreb is an international festival of contemporary music that takes place every other year in April, presenting a rich programme in the course of its duration (most often over eight days, several productions per day) of various formats and forms, from symphony orchestra and chamber ensemble concerts, experimental musical theatre, contemporary dance, jazz, electronics right to the alternative music scene.

Music Biennale Zagreb is also linked to other arts and related disciplines, and this is precisely the reason why it has occupied an exceptional and well-profiled place on the Croatian and regional cultural scene. The artistic directors of the 33rd MBZ are the composers Tomislav Oliver, Ivan Josip Skender and Davor Branimir Vincze.

The 33rd Zagreb Music Biennale will be held from 5-12 April 2025.

Deadline: 3 November 2023

More info and apply: https://www.mbz.hr/en/news/music-biennale-zagreb-is-looking-for-an-executive-director-and-a-producer

Artists are invited to submit projects under three themes: Pushing Sonic Boundaries; Sound Modulation for Social Transformation; and Preserving East African Heritage.

If you’re ready to push your project over the finish line, this opportunity is perfect for you!

For an intensive two week period in November, Kenyan artists will be hosted by Ajabu Ajabu in Dar Es Salaam (30t October – 12 November 2023), and Tanzanian artists will be hosted by Santuri in Nairobi (13-27 November 2023). The residency lets you manage your own time, but also includes one-on-one mentoring sessions, workshops on performance, mixing and mastering. Transport and accommodation will be provided, as well as a daily stipend of 1500 Ksh / 26114 TSH.

zusa: ‘What’s Next?’ Residencies for Artists and Cultural Professionals (Germany)

The cultural and civil society organisation zusa is organising residencies in Berlin in the framework of ‘What’s next?’ which will focus on two thematic axes:

Reflection and re-thinking on the idea of solidarity in Europe.

Mental well-being of artists and cultural professionals.

Residents will be encouraged to explore possible interrelations between those two seemingly distant topics. The residencies will be dedicated to experimenting, collaborating, exchanging, and exploring what kind of micro-utopian interaction art may propose in reaching solidarity. How does solidarity look in culture and what is its future in the face of continuing crises affecting the world? Can supporting the mental well-being of arts professionals become a driving force for the future of solidarity in culture?

Six artists and one curator or researcher or culture manager will be invited to spend time in Berlin between February and April 2024. Since not all the artists will meet during the residency, the curator / researcher / culture manager will team up with an invited local curator to interconnect and build a bridge between residencies.

During the residencies artists and cultural professionals will be asked to work on reflection diaries on the residency topic. The form for the diary will be a free choice – e.g. notes, sketches, short videoart, sound recording, etc. Other than that, the residents will be expected to prepare two small-scale meetings / events for a community of artists, culture managers, researchers and friends gathered around the AiR zusa programme, zusa and MitOst networks. The form of the meetings will be decided by residents together.

The residents will also be offered networking opportunities with the Berlin local culture scene, as well as external mental health support in the form of individual sessions and group circles which are a fixed component of the residency programme in the zusa organisation. There will be a possibility to slow down and take a break in nature in Brandeburg.

zusa offers residents:

A monthly stipend of 1000 EUR, accommodation (in an individual room) in Berlin and travel costs reimbursement up to 200 EUR.

A safer and supportive environment, where they can work without fear of discrimination or harassment.

Access to zusa’s network (Berlin & international);

There is the possibility to come to the residency with family. The resident will be responsible for covering the family members’ travel costs. The additional fellowship will be offered (1 child = 200 EUR, 2 children = 300 EUR).

The residency is dedicated to artists and cultural professionals based in European countries but with focus on Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Austria, and Germany. The priority will be given to the following disciplines: visual arts, architecture, music, literature. However, zusa allow for the possibility of extending the group to other disciplines.

Deadline: 26 October 2023

More info and apply: https://zusaculture.org/whats-next-residency-open-call-for-artists-and-cultural-professionals/

tekhnē is a collaborative project in which six European organisations aim to explore the emancipatory potential of technology in music and sound art. By engaging critically and creatively with technology, and by putting the focus on the user rather than the developer, technologies and methodologies can be demystified and lead to more autonomous mindsets towards the tools around us.

For its research residencies, tekhnē welcomes artists, researchers, art educators and cultural workers working with and around autonomous and experimental approaches to technology, and reflections about what can be considered technology. The research residencies are considered space to explore a particular line of research, without the need to produce a concrete, final project.

Research residencies are hosted by one of three organisations, and applicants are encouraged to consider the specific expertise and conditions of each. Residency lengths vary between two and six weeks, between December 2023 and December 2024. Travel (within Europe), as well as accommodation and either a fee or per diem are provided. Residents will have the possibility to present their work and/or lead a workshop if desired.

GMEA offers two residencies of two weeks in 2024 in Albi, France. A per diem of 30€/day as well as technical and research support is offered.

TRAFO offers one residency of three weeks in December 2023 in Szczecin, Poland. A fee of 1000€ as well as technical and research support is offered. This residency specifically invites artists who would like to share their practice with the broader audience of Trafo contemporary art centre and students of the Academy of Arts.

Q-O2 offers six residencies of six weeks in 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. A per diem of 25€/day as well as technical and research support is offered.

Deadline: 30 September 2023

More info and apply: https://tekhne.website

MusicAIRE: Call for an External Evaluator

MusicAIRE (An Innovative Recovery for Europe) aims to provide tailor-made instruments for the music sector and contribute to a green, digital, just, and resilient recovery of the music ecosystem. The project timeframe is that of a 30-month journey, which includes a needs-analysis phase (involving an online survey with 113 respondents and think tank meetings with 50 participants), and the launching of two open calls for applicants established in one of the 27 EU Member States and non-EU countries participating in the Creative Europe Programme. These open calls saw outstanding success, receiving over 700 applications, and leading to 51 awarded projects.

MusicAIRE is now calling for an external evaluator to perform an analysis of the effectiveness of the grant scheme and the estimated impact of ‘sustainability actions’ funded. The evaluation should cover the following criteria, answering the respective evaluation questions:

Effectiveness: How successful was the intervention in achieving (or progressing towards) its objectives? What have the quantitative and qualitative effects of the intervention been? Are they as expected when introducing the intervention?

Efficiency: was the intervention cost-effective and proportional in actual costs to benefits?

Relevance: To which extent did the project’s objectives and design respond to current and emerging needs? To what extent do the needs/problems addressed by the intervention continue to require action at the EU level?

Coherence: To what extent is this intervention coherent with other EU schemes that have similar objectives? To what extent is the intervention coherent with (current) wider EU policies and priorities (e.g. Commission policy priorities)?

EU added value: Could the identified results/outputs/impacts have been achieved without EU intervention? Is it still valid to assume that the objectives of the intervention can best be met by action at the EU level? What would be the most likely consequences of stopping or withdrawing EU intervention?

The evaluation is expected to take 55 working days, with an all-inclusive maximum budget of 16,000 EUR.

Deadline: 15 September 2023

More info and apply: https://musicaire.eu/open-calls/musicaire-eac-2021-0090-external-evaluation/

Cabin Studio is a new international residency space situated in the rural area of Mladá Boleslav, around 50 kilometres north of Prague. It is run under the patronage of an established Prague-based theatre named Studio Hrdinů. The building is a former gamekeeper’s lodge and has a strong history. Its main focus is residencies for sonic artists and musicians/ composers, as the region is strongly connected to the famous Czech classical composer Bedřich Smetana who also lived in the lodge in the 1880s.

Cabin Studio are announcing an open call for three artists who will be encouraged to prepare a composition for the festival Sanatorium Sonorum, which will be held in August 2024 in Cabin Studio Pěčice as a partially open-air event. The residents’ work will be presented as a part of the festival, which consists of new works inspired by the work of Bedřich Smetana. The festival is not limited to a specific music genre or practice. On the contrary, this call seeks musicians whose work may overlap in diverse media and are open to experimental approaches.

The residency will run for 38 days from 1 April – 8 May 2024. Residents will be provided with accommodation, suitable working space, relevant equipment and professional mentoring. The artists must be based in one of the 40 Creative Europe countries including their overseas countries and territories and outermost regions of the European Union.

As a hosting organisation, Cabin Studio cover travel costs (both ways), daily allowance of €25 (to cover food, local transportation, tickets and fees to events organised by the mentors and hosting organization), and a fee of around €1660 (40,000 CZK) brutto. There is additional funding available for green travel, for applicants from outermost regions or overseas country and territories, or for artists with children.

Deadline: 11 September 2023

More info and apply: https://studiohrdinu.cz/en/production/cabin-studio-pecice-open-call-2024/

CTM Festival: Call for Hybrid Radio/Live Works (Germany)

The CTM Radio Lab supports the creation of new works that explore the intersection of radio with live performance within the context of the festival’s yearly theme. The initiative is led by CTM Festival and Deutschlandfunk Kultur – Radio Art / Klangkunst in collaboration with Goethe-Institut, ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst, and Ö1 Kunstradio. In 2024 it is also presented within the framework of the sound art initiative tekhne.

The call is open to artists worldwide and relevant to fields of experimental music, sound art, radio art, new radio drama, and performance. The commissioned works will premiere at CTM 2024 Festival in Berlin (26 January – 4 February 2024), and will be subsequently broadcast in Deutschlandfunk Kultur’s Klangkunst programme in spring in the form of a 40–55 minute radio piece. The Österreichischer Rundfunk (Austrian Broadcasting Service) will also present the works via one or more of its platforms: the Ö1 Zeit-Ton or Ö1 Kunstradio radio shows, and/or the ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst festival in Graz (autumn 2024).

This year the Radio Lab focus is on live performance formats (rather than installations). Projects must respond to CTM 2024’s theme of Sustain, and more specifically engage with the emancipatory potential of technology in music and sound art, which is the core focus of tekhnē. Narrative, speculative, investigative approaches might for example explore technology as a tool to corrupt or strengthen democracy, histories or potentials of radio and modern broadcasting methodologies, the agency of users, accessibility, or other. Live performances should be conceptualised in such a way that a radio piece can be created in the same spirit.

Two selected works will be supported by a fee of 5000€ each. The commission winners are responsible for covering costs relating to the research and creation of the work (eg. collaborator honorariums, specific materials purchase, etc). Technical/staging costs for CTM and for possible presentations at ORF musikprotokoll im steirischen herbst festival will be covered additionally, upon discussion with the respective organisers.

Winners will be offered a short residency in January 2024 to finalise their live presentation at CTM 2024. Travel expenses to Berlin and lodging during the residency and festival period will be covered by CTM. Please bear in mind that project proposals involving multiple collaborators are possible, but should aim for a modest travel budget to be seriously considered – for example, a project proposing to fly a group of four artists from the other side of the globe would be prohibitively expensive.

Deadline: 10 September 2023

More info and apply: https://www.ctm-festival.de/festival-2024/open-calls/ctm-radio-lab-2024
