In the framework of its mission to support mobility, the Roberto Cimetta Fund allocates on demand mobility grants, to meet the needs of cultural professionals and artists in the Mediterranean.

Aiming at promoting inclusive mobility, the Roberto Cimetta Fund gives priority to candidates with little access to mobility and/or who are poorly inserted into international cultural circuits. This call for applications for a travel grant is thus dedicated to women artists and cultural professionals from the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean, who are willing to travel within the southern Mediterranean region for south-south mobility (North Africa and the Middle East). The mobility must be completed before September 2023.

The purpose of the mobility must be one of the following:

Preparation of a professional level project.

Participation in a research or creation residency.

Presence at a meeting of artists or professionals with the objective of networking between cultural, artistic and development actors.

Artistic and professional training/education (internships, masterclasses, exchanges, study trips) or participation as a speaker or a trainer.

Attendance at debates, conferences, seminars.

A lump sum will be awarded to the winners: between 500€ and 700€ per grant, allowing cover (at least partially) for the costs related to mobility in general: tickets, visas, accommodation, etc. This call will deliver between 12 and 20 grants. Grants will be allocated after the trip, upon presentation of supporting documents, a written report, and visuals.

Deadline: 30 December 2022

More info and apply: https://www.cimettafund.org/en/mobility-grants/

Measuring the Impact of a Mobility Grant

RCF is pleased to publish an assessment on the impact of mobility.

This assessment is a necessary follow-up, in the collaboration we have undertaken with regional and local partners, to define strategies for transnational artistic mobility. Our work aims to identify positive effects of travel and consequences in the nature and diversity of cultural and artistic products or offers.

The RCF decided to send a questionnaire to the grantees of the Fund in order to identify the concrete output of their travel and their opinions on mobility in the euro- middle east- north african region.

The questionnaire was drafted together with Inga Farina Petzhold from the University of Hildeshiem in Germany and Matina Magkou, PhD student working with Cristina Ortega Nuere at the Institute of Leisure Studies, University of Bilbao, Spain.

The questionnaire was sent to all the grantees of the Fund in October (around 500 email addresses). We registered the reception of this questionnaire in 18 countries such as Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Portugal, Serbia, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Croatia, United Kingdom and Spain. The 108 answers were received in November and December 2012.

A majority of the respondents mentioned that their travel grant led to a better integration in the artistic and cultural field and to concrete realizations (exhibitions, screenings, concerts, performances, touring, publications). The main motive for travelling was to set up or continue artistic projects.

The impact of the travel grant is realised on a short term period as 57,5% of the respondents realised that their travel had had a positive impact on their work either during or right after their travel.

96% of the respondents are still in touch with their host and 67% of them have returned or have concrete plans to return to the hosting countries for professional reasons. Finally, 45% of the respondents engage in mobility practices in the euro-middle east-north african region for professional reasons more than once a year.

This report does not seek to be an overall evaluation nor to reflect the opinions of all grantees. It is the first step of « a work in progress » that the RCF will continue in the next months.

International Artistic Mobility and Territorial Diplomacy

The Roberto Cimetta Fund (RCF), an international association providing support for transnational artistic and cultural mobility in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, is pleased to publish the report on the seminar “International Artistic Mobility and Territorial Diplomacy” that took place in Guimarães, European Capital of Culture 2012 on 24th May last.

This document is the first step in discussing and identifying local and regional strategies to develop transnational artistic mobility. We hope to continue and enlarge this working process with local and regional authorities in Europe and the Arab world taking into account the impact of globalisation and the models of cooperation that could be possible and relevant in this context.

50 stakeholders (artists, cultural operators, local and regional representatives or institutions) from 8 Arab, 10 European countries shared their expertise on these complex issues.

At a time when geographical concepts are adapting to the new axes of global exchange and alliances are being formed at regional and local levels as a consequence of the building of Europe, RCF would like to reassert the need for a cultural partnership between Europe and the Arab world. Investing in artistic mobility is not only an individual moment of political responsibility but has long term spin-off effects on the appropriation of global cultural products, identity building and new forms of cultural expression that can be source of renewal in the country of residence as well as the country of origin.

The Roberto Cimetta Fund extends its sincere gratitude to the partners of this seminar, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Guimarães, European Capital of Culture 2012.

It also deals with the social recognition of the artists and the role of mobility in the recognition of the artist and the dialogue between cultures.

This study focuses on legal and social measures which concern the work of southern Mediterranean artists. It also examines the process of social recognition and the role of mobility in the recognition of the artist and the dialogue between cultures.

Trough this study, the Roberto Cimetta Funds intended to:

- analyze the artists’ professional situation in the Mediterranean area, including the 10 countries of the Southern and Eastern shores, partners of the European Union,

- study the differents forms of European and International co-operation (mobility and dialogue, co-production, etc..), and elemnts contributing or handicaping this cooperation forms.

- formulate recommendations to the attention of policy and decision-makers aiming at the improvement of the artists’ professional situation, the promotion of creativity and the development of new forms of artistic expressions and artistic exchanges,

- value the capacity of contemporary arts to be an instrument of social inclusion and a tool of intercultural dialogue.

Made in the Med: The Challenges of Artistic Exchange in the Mediterranean

Made in the Med: The Challenges of Artistic Exchange in the Mediterranean, a publication on mobility in the Mediterranean area published in English & French by the Roberto Cimetta Fund, is available to download below.

Here is an extract from the Introduction….

We always come back to mobility. It’s the magic word of cultural co-operation. But what exactly are we talking about? Between migration – mobility limited by a search for better conditions of life – and what we would call ‘travel’, mobility always has many causes. Between the traveller who freely chooses a destination and the one who depends on a right of entry granted by someone else, the conditions of mobility are hardly the same. Between quick trips and residence, the impact of mobility on the mobile person – and on those who stay behind – is very different.

This publication addresses the mobility of cultural players: a mobility founded, in principle, on a desire for discovery, for reflection and for working together with those who operate in a different cultural context… from one side of the Mediterranean to the other.

Mobility in the Euromed Area - Roberto Cimetta Fund Conference Report

The mobility conferences in the Euromed joined together around forty professionals of the cultural sector including artists, cultural operators, programmers, and managers of cultural foundations. These were all experts in the current landscape for exchange between the banks of the Mediterranean. This collaboration helped to identify the special characteristics of mobility in the zone. It also situated the issue of mobility within the context of the geopolitical relations of the area, which are marked by tension, conflicts and a very strong North-South imbalance. All of the culture professionals possessed vast experience of artistic exchanges in the area, and their approach took into account the current situation in the zone, which is characterised by processes of democratisation, political reforms, and conditions of development. Their reflections made it possible to define a framework for analysis and action which will lead to a common vision of priorities and strategies for the support of mobility in the Euro-Med. In light of this, this meeting constitutes part of a process, and will be followed by a publication and by the organisation of a second cycle of conferences in 2008.

As a result of the exchanges and presentations of participants at the Fès conferences, the Fonds Roberto Cimetta and the Relais Culture Europe have conceived a synthesis, analysing the debates. This document has been conceived thanks to the communal reflection of these two organisations, and is based on their knowledge and experience of cultural cooperation in the zone. The Euro-Med is an area where issues of politics and culture overlap heavily, and this document aims to create a basis for action which will respond to its problems of mobility.
