In 2020, Flanders Arts Institute launched A Fair New World?!: four open calls in search for a more fair, sustainable and solidary arts field. The second call was centred around sustainability and international collaboration in the arts.

Ten arts professionals were selected out of the open call for a one-year group reflection on that theme. Flanders Arts Institute invited independent arts manager and writer Jumana Al-Yasiri to collaborate on the dissemination of the trajectory. She conducted five conversations with arts leaders and artists from various geographical zones and contexts, about the question of sustainable international work in the arts:

Yasen Vasilev (Bulgaria)

Nike Jonah (UK, African diaspora)

Arundhati Ghosh (India)

Mohamed Abusal (Gaza)

Golrokh Nafisi (Iran)

Flanders Arts Institute: Part-time Project Coordinator for Brexit Adjustment Reserve (Belgium)

Flanders Arts Institute is looking for an experienced project coordinator to coordinate the Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR) project.

Flanders Arts Institute stimulates cooperation and exchange between the arts field and policy in Flanders and the UK. Over the past decades they have built strong relationships with cultural actors, platforms and intermediaries, and have set up numerous programmes for British professionals in Flanders and vice versa.

Today they are examining the impact of Brexit on existing networks and government instruments, and are developing instruments and proposals to strengthen relations with the UK and make them more sustainable.

You will map out the relationships between the arts field, arts policy and the intermediary organisations in Flanders and the UK. You will monitor and analyse this data to identify potential gaps and opportunities. You will search for answers to questions such as:

What does the collaboration between the Flemish and British arts sector look like, and what impact will Brexit have on the wishes and possibilities of the Flemish arts?

What are the opportunities and obstacles in UK arts policy for cooperation between Flemish and British players?

How can the collaboration between the Flemish and British arts scenes be promoted through relations between Flanders Arts Institute and intermediary organisations in the UK such as the British Council, Arts Council England & Wales, Creative Scotland, and other centres of expertise on specific themes?

Based on your analysis, you will develop a framework to make the collaboration more sustainable.

Flanders Arts Institute offer:

A substantively challenging job with the necessary autonomy in a team of enthusiastic colleagues.

A workplace in the heart of Brussels, near the Central Station.

A part-time contract of one or two days a week and a maximum duration of 14 months.

A salary in accordance with joint industrial council PC 329.01, cat B1a (seniority is taken into account) or as an independent contractor.

Extra remuneration in the form of meal vouchers, a home-work subscription.

Flexible working hours with the option to work from home.

Reimbursement of your expenses.

Deadline: 16 November 2022

More info and apply: https://www.kunsten.be/en/now-in-the-arts/vacature-kunstenpunt-zoekt-een-deeltijdse-projectcoordinator-verenigd-koninkrijk-v-m-x-senior/

Flanders Arts Institute: Call for Proposals, ‘Diversity in the Arts’

Diversity enriches us and helps us grow. This is especially important in the arts. In true diversity, perspectives that deviate from the social norm are also heard and included equally. But that doesn’t happen by itself.

Flanders Arts Institute sees diversity as a precondition for sustainable cohesion, a driver of innovation, and necessary for broad social support for the arts. Which is why this latest call under ‘A Fair New Idea?!’ is in search of ideas and proposals that can strengthen diversity within the Flanders and Brussels arts field.

Flanders Arts Institute wish to do this from the perspective of intersectionality: with special attention to the different dimensions in which people experience discrimination, and how they influence each other.

Specifically, they are looking for ideas that can offer the arts field in Flanders and Brussels a foothold for greater diversity:

Tools.

Resources.

Checklists.

Forms of knowledge sharing.

Knowledge networks.

Small pilot projects.

These would deal with topics such as:

Diverse artistic content.

Well thought-out inclusive public outreach and/or personnel policy

safe spaces.

Insights, opinions or taste preferences that are not discussed enough.

In short, everything that you think contributes to diversity in the arts. The most important condition: the call does not support purely artistic projects. The aim is to strengthen the arts field in its pursuit of diversity.

During a first application round, seven short pitches will receive 400 euros to submit a detailed proposal. The jury then has a budget of 12,000 euros available to allocate to one winning proposal, or to divide among multiple (max 3) strong proposals.

The call is open to artists and arts professionals in Flanders, Belgium or elsewhere in the world, who want to come together to develop and test ideas around international working that can have an impact on the arts field in Flanders and Brussels and beyond.

Deadline: 10 September 2021

More info and apply: https://afairnewidea.be/en/thema-4

Flanders Arts Institute: Call for Proposals for Working Sustainably Internationally (Online)

The arts field is largely internationally oriented. But what does ‘international’ mean today? Are we talking about countries, markets, cultures, languages, histories? And to what extent is ‘international’ territorial, especially if you look at the diverse communities present in Flanders and Brussels?

International professional travel is a privilege, for which one needs opportunities and (access to) resources. It is increasingly fast-paced, expensive, and associated with a large ecological footprint.

How can the ‘timeout’ on international transit imposed by Covid offer the time and space to look for solutions?

Are there any issues around international work that concern you? Do you have ideas on how to make it more sustainable, and do you feel like working out some of them with a group of people sharing the same concern over a period of maximum one year?

This call is open to artists and arts professionals in Flanders, Belgium or elsewhere in the world. Seven applicants will be selected to form a working group – first coming together in April 2021 – with a budget of 12,000 euros to pay for working time. A fair distinction will be made between participants with a fixed income and those working on a freelance or independent basis.

Deadline: 19 March 2021

More info and apply: https://afairnewidea.be/en/thema-2

On the Move is a big fan of this card game developed by the Flanders Arts Institute: it can be an excellent basis to facilitate group discussions on internationalising one’s practices in the performing arts’ sector.

This card game was developed in the context of (Re)framing the International, a research & development trajectory on new ways of working internationally in the arts.

Conception: Marijke De Moor & Joris Janssens
Editing & production: Nele De Cocker
