In 2020, Don Sen Folo opened an artistic residency, the Don Sen Folo – LAB, on two hectares in the village of Bancoumana, 50 km from Bamako. This space can accommodate artists for their research, experimentation and creative work.

Built with respect for tradition and the environment, Don Sen Folo – LAB is about people, considering what they are and what they have. Man must reclaim his history and his territory, and imagine a world where there are no boundaries between people, between Man and Nature, between past and present, between the Living and the Non-Living.

For artists, taking up residency at Don Sen Folo – LAB means seeking to restore a link with the local population and give birth to new shared imaginations.

GNININI WOMEN is a laboratory for young African choreographers under 35 years of age.

GNININI is an open space set in a territory conducive to exchanges and encounters with local residents. A space where Art is accessible everywhere and to everyone, as a promise, a dream, a gift.

The residency will take place over 2 consecutive months of choreographic work in common spaces (public space) either from 8 January – 3 March 2023 (inclusive) or from 1 April – 26 May 2023 (inclusive).

The residency covers round-trip transportation from your place of residence to the Don Sen Folo-LAB in Bancoumana, Mali. By bus if you come from West Africa, by plane if you come from another African country. It also provides board and lodging for two months at the Don Sen Folo – LAB in Bancoumana, and a work grant of a total of 400,000 CFA francs for the two-month residency.

Deadline: 22 December 2023

More info and apply: https://donsenfolo.com/appel-gninini-women/

Arab Arts Focus: Call for Arab Performances for D-CAF Festival (Egypt)

The 8th edition of Arab Arts Focus will take place this year as part of D-CAF Festival from 2-5 November 2023.

Since 2014, D-CAF has been hosting a biennial Arab Arts Focus (AAF) during the festival in Cairo. The Arab Arts Focus was created to promote artists from the Arab World, whether based in it or residing outside of it. It has collaborated with some of the major international performing arts networks: ISPA, IETM, ONDA.

The AAF has also been held internationally at Edinburgh Fringe 2017 and La Manufacture, Avignon Off 2018. It works to support the development of the Arts sector in the Arab world by providing artists from the region the opportunity to show their work to an international audience and professionals. AAF also hosts pitch sessions by artists from the region, along with panel discussions and networking receptions.

The aim of the AAF is to provide the exposure, networking, touring and co-production opportunities to the performing arts work presented, and therefore key international programmers from around the world are invited to attend its showcase in Cairo.

This is an open call for Arab artists to submit their latest theatre, dance, or multidisciplinary performing arts work, with a chance to be selected to be part of this year’s showcase. Directors/Choreographers with an Arab nationality or from an Arab descent, living in or outside the Arab world are invited to apply with a fully-finished performing arts production completed in the last 2 years (2022 onwards).

The festival covers full travel from/to Egypt and accommodation costs, technical support, and a symbolic compensation.

Deadline: 19 July 2023

More info and apply: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hQ6Hd23tNg_7k19aeEMinSr6ndIrGFql/view

Be a citizen of one of the countries in Central Africa.

Dëkandoo: Residency and Group Exhibition for Visual Artists of Spanish or Equatoguinean Origin (Senegal)

The Dëkandoo Artistic Residence, in collaboration with the Cultural Section of the Spanish Embassy in Senegal, Cultura Dakar, the Instituto Cervantes of Dakar, the Cultural Centers of Spain in Bata and Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, and Casa África launch a call for research and production residencies for exhibition, aimed at artists of Spanish or Equatoguinean origin, as well as all those who identify with these territories and wish to develop a research and artistic creation project linked to the commune of Gandiol and the Natural Park of the Langue de Barbarie.

This five-week residency (beginning 1 November 2023) is conceived as an immersion experience in the local environment that will trigger a creative process in dialogue with the geographical, natural, social, economic, historical or even spiritual context. The call is open to a wide variety of disciplines that can be encompassed within visual art. Proposals that explore expanded artistic media, such as textile art, ceramics, woodworking or recycling, in which design, creativity and innovation play a central role, are strongly encouraged. Work with local artisans and/or artists will also be fostered. As a conceptual objective, the aim is to create works that provide a reflection on the territory and the relationship of human beings with their physical and natural environment, including their beliefs and cultural practices.

As a result of the residency, and in the context of the Partcours 2023 programme, a group exhibition will be held at the headquarters of the Instituto Cervantes in Dakar, which will host the works created during the stay, as well as material documenting the process of creation. The Partcours initiative arose from the desire to promote the activity of art spaces, galleries, museums and foundations operating in the city of Dakar, creating synergies and mobilising the public around contemporary art. With eleven editions held to date, it has become an unmissable event for the cultural sector in Senegal, with an increasingly international projection, and constitutes a true platform for all those interested in art. Through this exhibition, the artistic diversity of the Spanish-speaking world and the networks of Spanish cultural institutions that make the project possible will be highlighted.

The call is open to people of Spanish and/or Equatoguinean origin, with a proven activity in the field of visual art. Selected artists will receive a compensation of 800 euros gross for the participation and creation of works. A financial endowment will be provided for the production. In addition, travel expenses and accommodation will be covered by the organisers. Travel and accommodation in Dakar during the opening of the exhibition will also be covered.

Deadline: 11 June 2023

More info and apply: https://dekandoo.com/open-calls/

LAPA makes its connection with communities and asks what kind of potential could we encourage when we are housed together. Enacting the term LAPA, the residency becomes a space of communing to explore themes of home, family and place.

In 2023 the open call extends within Africa to expand on the continental network and establish necessary travel and connection.

The residency ideates on borderless states of being as a way to consider new pan-africanism and African states. This is beyond language but underpinned by modes of speaking through the visual, sonic, digital and more.

Taken from a text by Amilcar Cabral who prefaced ideas of unity and struggle within the African agenda, the phrase ‘Our people are our mountains’ illustrates the landscape and its metaphors as a condition of life: what is tied and coded between people into land and how it writes many other conditions of living.

Artists apply to one of three separate residency sessions:

Session 1 - Enunciation: Voicing in many forms: 1 September – 25 November 2023.

Session 2 – Imbibe earthen processes: 5 February – 27 April 2024.

Session 3 – Contextual landings: 2 September – 23 November 2024.

LAPA is developed for artists across all disciplines, based in Africa, who have been professionally active for at least 6 years. Priority will be given to pairings working on the continent or between the continent and the diaspora, understanding that these links exist in dynamic and political ways. The duo/pair/collective will seek to expand their working relationship to continue developing their artistic language and research. The residency can accommodate up to two representatives from an artist collective.

The organisers cover travel to and from LAPA (return flight and ground travel from OR Tambo Intl. Airport to Brixton, Johannesburg) and monthly living/subsistence costs. There is also a fee of 6000 ZAR/month (each) to cover basic living expenses and materials and resources. A separate budget allocation is made for the artist’s production budget and a public moment.

Deadline: 31 May 2023

More info and apply: https://d1fdloi71mui9q.cloudfront.net/puptUSORjy42moS67kAI_LAPA%20Brixton%20Open%20Call%20April%202023_Final%20Doc-3.pdf

Contemporary Dance Night (CDN) is an annual independent contemporary dance event that started in 2011 in order to develop the art of contemporary dance in Egypt and make it a more familiar art form.

The event is a series of live dance pieces (new creations and reshowcasing), dance videos, seminars, workshops and various activities, all under the same umbrella. The team of CDN share together the belief that contemporary dance is a means for self-expression within the current challenging political, social, and cultural context. For this edition they are inviting choreographers who share this belief to present their work in Contemporary Dance Night 2023.

The seventh edition of Contemporary Dance Night will take place in the last quarter of 2023, in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt between late November and early December 2023.

In this call, choreographers from Egypt and partnered countries are invited to apply with their new concepts/creations projects, for a two-month residency programme in Cairo, Egypt, where they will work with Egyptian dancers/artists, as well as a modest production grant, to realise these productions. For all foreign artists not residing in Cairo, all costs are covered including travel expenses, accommodation, rehearsal space and pocket money during the whole period.

The call is open to young and mid-career contemporary dancers and choreographers who are a citizen or resident in Egypt, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Germany, America, and the Arabic region.

Common Stories: Common LAB 2023 (France, Sweden, Egypt, Portugal)

Common Stories are looking for 8 theatre directors, playwrights, choreographers and performance makers to take part in Common LAB 2023, an itinerant 8-week laboratory to experiment with collective and individual devices for knowledge sharing, and the development of artistic research, broadening European narratives.

Co-funded by the Creative Europe programme, Common Stories is a project that brings together performing arts organisations, artists and audiences to address the dynamic notions of identity and diversity in a changing European society. It will organise 3 Common LABs, one for each year of the project, paying particularly close attention to:

Artistic practices and stories that are underrepresented or absent from our institutions. The relevance of diversity in language, aesthetics and representation.

Public space and visibility. How cities’ architecture and urban policies shape what is valued, made visible and invisible.

Common LAB 2023 will take place:

4-17 September 2023 in Bobigny, France (hosted by MC93).

6-20 October 2023 in Stockholm, Sweden (hosted by Riksteatern).

21 October – 4 November 2023 in Cairo, Egypt (hosted by Orient Productions, during the DCAF festival).

5-20 November 2023 in Lisbon, Portugal (hosted by Alkantara, during the Alkantara Festival).

At the LAB, participants will take part in an exchange programme but also have opportunities to research and pitch their own projects.

The programme covers travel and accommodation and offers a stipend of 80€/day.

Applicants should be performing arts artists living and working in Europe, with a good command of English.

Deadline: 3 April 2023

More info and apply: https://www.culturgest.pt/en/whats-on/open-call-common-lab-2023/

Oscillations Residency Programme, ‘Sonic Inquiries and Practices’ (Germany / South Africa)

Oscillations: Sonic Inquiries and Practices is a two-year project jointly organised and curated by the Akademie der Künste (Berlin), Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape (Cape Town) and Deutschlandfunk Kultur / Klangkunst (Berlin).

Oscillations is founded on the premise that sound is knowledge. Epistemological and sonic objects usually circulate together, connecting geographies of the global south and north which we understand as trans-hemispheric connections. However, their coupled oscillations also exhibit erasures and distortions, as traces of violence and ignorance.

Animated by the project partners’ commitment to critically engage with contemporary shifts in sound discourses, artistic practices and aesthetic histories, Oscillations is intended to bring a trans-hemispheric relation into sound practice and sonic inquiry. Implicit to the relation, and process is a conceptual framing that pays attention to the historically asymmetrical and ambiguous character of shared colonial histories.

The current open call covers residencies in Berlin and Cape Town and is aimed at sound artists, scholars and cultural practitioners based in Southern Africa.

Three two-month residencies in Berlin are directed at mid-career sound artists, partly supported by the DAAD Arts & Media Program. The residencies in Berlin cover:

Return economy flight from a major city in Southern Africa to Berlin.

Residency stipend of €2700 incl. accommodation, ground transport, insurance, daily allowance.

Participation in regular meetings and workshops at the Academy of Arts during the residency.

Collective exchange with project participants in regular online meetings and participation in listening and reading sessions with the CHR’s Sound Working Group.

Development of an audio work to be presented as an installation at Akademie der Künste, Berlin and as a radio broadcast at Deutschlandfunk Kultur/Klangkunst (German broadcast), April/May 2024.

Progress on an article-length manuscript with the view to publishing in a peer-reviewed academic journal in 2024/2025 if appropriate.

In Cape Town, the call covers two two-month residencies for mid-career practitioners and two one-month residencies for entrants new to the field of sonic inquiry and practice. Residencies can be taken up in the June 2023 – March 2024 period. The two-month residency in Cape Town covers:

Return economy flight from a major city in Southern Africa to Cape Town.

Residency stipend 2700€ (incl. accommodation, ground transport, insurance, daily allowance).

Participation in regular listening and reading sessions with the CHR’s Sound Working Group.

Participation in reading group/laboratory on archiving sound art.

Participation at CHR’s Annual Winter School.

Presentation of work in progress at the Oscillations Workshop, scheduled to take place 11 – 14 September 2023.

Development of an audio work to be presented as an installation at Akademie der Künste, Berlin and as a radio broadcast at Deutschlandfunk Kultur (German broadcast), April/May 2024.

Progress on an article-length manuscript with the view to publishing in a peer reviewed academic journal in 2024/2025 if appropriate.

Deadline: 4 April 2023

More info and apply: https://www.chrflagship.uwc.ac.za/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/OSCILLATIONS-CFA_02_03_23-_4.pdf
