Circostrada Network launches Bounce – a new mentoring programme for contemporary circus and outdoor arts workers.

Bounce is a mentoring programme dedicated to providing tools, connections, knowledge and resources to the next generation of contemporary circus and outdoor arts workers. It proposes skills for future steps, giving a space for participants to explore creative, relational, and economic potential in an international context and deepen their reflection on their working environment through the prism of Circostrada’s annual red threads.

The programmes includes:

A 16-hour development programme with a facilitator from Circostrada members and external experts.
Participation in a kick-off event just before the Fresh international seminar in France (18-22 September, 2023) in order to meet the other participants and facilitators (including travel, per diems, and accommodation).
3 workshops (1 online and 2 on-site) guided by experts and connected to Circostrada’s annual red thread. Participants will reflect on this topic with researchers, thinkers, and workers focused on projects and actions around fairness, equity, equality, inclusion, diversity and/or accessibility.
A 250€ budget for a mobility grant for an in-person meeting with your facilitator or a fee for an external expert of your choice to advise you on your project.
A meeting with last year’s Bounce programme participants.
Participation in the Circostrada General Meeting in Rastatt, Germany (28 May - 2 June 2024) for the Tête-à-tête festival (including travel, per diems, and accommodation).
An alumni platform where participants can exchange and create a long-lasting community, including last year’s participants and facilitators.

Participants will reflect on this topic with researchers, thinkers, and workers focused on projects and actions around fairness, equity, equality, inclusion, diversity and/or accessibility.

Circostrada: European Project Officer (France)

Since 2003, ARTCENA has coordinated Circostrada, whose mission is to develop and structure the contemporary circus and outdoor arts sectors in Europe and worldwide. With more than 140 member organisations from over 40 countries, the network contributes to building a sustainable future for these sectors by empowering cultural workers through the production of resources, observation and research, professional exchanges and information sharing.

Reporting to the Coordinator of Circostrada Network and Head of International Development at ARTCENA, and in close collaboration with the other international project officer (production / administration), your main duties will be:

Coordinate and implement the communication strategy of Circostrada.
Create the resources, dissemination and information tools of Circostrada.
Support the collaborative governance of Circostrada.
Contribute to improve the impact of the actions carried out by Circostrada.
To contribute to the development of ARTCENA’s international projects.

Below are listed some of the assets and abilities that we are looking for the position of European Project Officer:

Experience in communication of European or international cultural projects.
Highly independent, quick thinking, with organisational skills, rigour and the ability to see the big picture.
Creativity, initiative, an ability to adapt and comfortable working in a team.
Excellent communication and listening skills, interpersonal relations and diplomatic skills.
Fluent French and English essential (other languages an advantage).
An interest in performing arts and intercultural exchanges is an advantage.
Knowledge of contemporary circus and arts in public spaces is an advantage.

The post is full-time and works out of the ARTCENA offices in Paris. Salary follows Group 5 of the CCNEAC (French national cultural employees’ pay scale), grade according to experience. Start date is 5 September 2022.

Shaking the Current Guides on Eco-responsibility and Ethics

Shaking the Current is a new series of digital publications made by Circostrada in collaboration with a broad network of thinkers, writers, researchers, illustrators, and photographers.

The first two guides of the Shaking the Current Series are the Handbook for contemporary circus and outdoor arts workers to navigate ecological transformation (written by Herman Bashiron Mendolicchio) and the Handbook for contemporary circus and outdoor arts workers to navigate social responsibility and ethics (written by David Márquez Martín de la Leona).

These two handbooks are designed to provide you with some general knowledge on high-priority topics, in this case eco-responsibility/sustainability on the one hand and ethics and social responsibility on the other hand - along with a series of perspectives from the contemporary circus and outdoor arts fields, while giving you a useful set of recommendations to make a positive change in your professional practice.

An individual 16-hour tailor-made programme with a facilitator who will help structure the participants’ individual career plans.
A collective reflection on the transformation of the participants’ work and professional environment guided by experts and connected to Circostrada’s annual red thread ‘Living body/ies’. Participants will reflect on this topic with researchers, thinkers and workers from the ecological field, encouraging the opening of their own professional practice to sustainability and ecology.
Participation in a kick-off event in Paris on 24-25 February 2022 and in the Circostrada General Meeting in Kaunas, Lithuania in June 2022 (including travel, per diems, and accommodation).

European Funded Projects 2019: Focus on Circus and Street Arts

This publication presents a mapping of circus and street arts projects that have received funding from the Creative Europe Programme, as well as from the Erasmus + and Interreg programmes of the European Commission in 2019, along with a selection from 2020.

A new tool, for what objectives?

This new edition pursues the following objectives: to identify projects and networks currently active in the circus and street arts sectors, to promote available opportunities for artists and cultural professionals, and to highlight inspiring community-related grants.

A new tool, for whom?

Artists, companies, collectives, cultural professionals and organisation, policy makers willing to better understand the talents and evolution of the sectors, its aesthetics, formats and contents.

A new tool to inspire & empower circus and street arts professionals

Among the 66 circus and street arts EU-funded projects (2019) collected in the frame of this research and presented in this publication (which does not claim to be exhaustive), you’ll find: 41 circus arts specific, 14 street arts specific and 9 multidisciplinary projects. SOYA - Stirring Opportunities with Yummy Asia: Mobility Guide #1 Asia-Europe

After a first research trip of Circostrada to Japan in December 2016 and in view of the forthcoming one in South Korea in October 2018, the network has decided in partnership with On the Move, to delve deeper into the connections between Europe and Asia by exploring the needs of professionals working in the fields of circus and street arts and by sharing the inspirational experiences of those network members already working across the Eurasian continent.

Conceived as a hand-on tool, this mobility guide aims to be resourceful and inspirational for future collaborations. It not only gives an overview and a mapping of Asian artistic scene in circus and street arts, it helps also to organise and plan a mobility project for all cultural players through funding mobility schemes, administrative pieces of advice and inspiring collaboration testimonies.

Fresh Circus #2

It includes the texts delivered by the reporters from Circostrada Network and by the observer Anne-Marie Autissier, as well as beautiful pictures taken during the working sessions by the photographer David Konečny.

It also includes the synthesis of the session “Green circus arts”: what environmental responsibilities? attended and moderated by On the Move!

This publication highlights inspiring initiatives and echoes the positive energy and lively discussions of the 2-days meeting at Parc et Grande Halle de la Villette.

Guide to Artistic Residencies for Circus and Street Arts

Circostrada Network - OTM member - published a set of directories of artistic residency centres that are specialised in the street and circus arts, or that host artists from these sectors.

Three publications are available so far, about Belgium, France and the UK. Available to download free of charge, the publications provide detailed information categorized by geographical area so as to assist in their search for existing opportunities, in the professionalization of their practices and in the development of their international mobility.
