Mobility and Touring in West Africa is part of Art Moves Africa’s work as a committed arts organisation that aims to strengthen the development and dissemination of information on mobility in Africa. The publication is by François Bouda (lead researcher), Espéra Donouvossi, Devin Hentz and Luc Mayitoukou.

The work intends to understand the factors underlying the strong mobility dynamics observed in the region, while identifying the existing obstacles and developing recommendations that can strengthen the existing dynamism.

Since the organisation’s launch in 2005, AMA’s statistics consistently highlight West Africa as the most active region on the continent in terms of mobility, both in terms of intra- and inter-regional mobility. AMA sought to understand the factors that undergird this dynamism and identify examples of best practices that might be able to nourish advocacy and support for the development of the African creative sector more generally.

The study also aims to identify areas of weakness (in terms of artistic disciplines, countries, axes of exchange, etc.) and to understand the factors that are inhibiting mobility within the region and in connection with other African regions (especially Eastern and Southern Africa).

Our guide to cross-border mobility for artists and cultural workers from and travelling to Africa.

This cultural mobility funding guide lists national, local and international resources from both public and private funders. Two kinds of opportunity are included: outgoing and incoming. The outgoing opportunities are for nationals and residents of African countries wishing to travel outside their country. The incoming opportunities are for nationals from other continents who want to travel to African countries.

The guide only lists regular opportunities that are accessible online (for instance for touring, residencies, collaborations, training, etc.). Funds where information is only available offline, schemes which do not use open calls, and one-off or short-term funding programmes are not included.

Since 2011, On the Move has published 60 funding guides focusing on specific countries or world regions. They aim to make information on mobility funding clear and accessible, letting artists and cultural operators explore the field of opportunities. By gathering a large body of information in one place, they also help funders and policymakers to see how support is structured and to notice any shortfalls.

Our guides are always produced with partners, organisations and/or researchers who have a close relationship to the region, and we try to make them as complete as possible. If you see something is missing and it meets our editorial policy, then you can email mobility@on-the-move.org

Discover more about Art Moves Africa’s new publication, Retracing Roots and Tracing New Routes: Mobility and Touring in North Africa. This is the latest publication in its series of regional studies on arts mobility in Africa.

The new study is available for online viewing in e-book format or for download in PDF format.

Based on interviews with 90 artists and cultural practitioners across the region, the study provides:

A mapping of spaces and organisations in North Africa that currently support artists’ and cultural actors’ mobility;

an analysis of the obstacles inhibiting mobility to/from/within North Africa;

country-specific information;

and recommendations geared at supporting and strengthening mobility to/from/within the region.

The study was completed by researcher Lara Bourdin (Research coordinator for AMA) between December 2018 and April 2019, thanks to the generous support of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

AMA/Art Moves Africa is thrilled to announce the release of “Mobility and Touring in Central Africa,” its third publication on mobility and touring in Africa.

Since its launch in July 2005, AMA has awarded more than 750 grants to artists and art practitioners living and working in Africa. To complement its grants program, AMA implemented its research program in 2010 as a means of identifying the infrastructures that support mobility within the different African regions as well as the obstacles that impede this mobility.

Building on the success of AMA’s two pilot studies on mobility and touring in East Africa, “Mobility and Touring in Central Africa” provides an overview of the general patterns in mobility in the region; an overview of the main actors involved in the region’s cultural sector; and an analysis of the importance and frequency of artistic mobility from that geographical area towards the rest of the African continent.

The study was implemented between February and September 2015 by a team of independent researchers led by independent expert Télesphore Mba Bizo. The report covers nine cities in six Central African countries, namely: Yaoundé and Douala in Cameroon (by Télesphore Mba Bizo); Libreville in Gabon (by Jules Kamdem Taguiawa); Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire in Congo-Brazzaville (by Jean-Marie Mollo Olinga); Kinshasa and Lubumbashi in DRC (by Martial Ébénézer Nguéa); Bangui in the Central African Republic (by Modeste Gobi Mauraye); and N’Djamena in Chad (by Abdoulaye Abdoul Oumaté).

Art Moves Africa (AMA) proudly presents « Mobility &Touring in East Africa », a research commissioned in 2011 and implemented by Hildegard Kiel on the performing arts sector in East Africa.

Since its establishment in 2005, Art Moves Africa worked on sponsoring and developing artistic mobility within the African continent. With the support of regular evaluations and statistics of applications received and of grants allocated to African cultural practitioners, AMA succeeded in developing its interventions as grant making organization and to identify needs within the African artistic mobility sector.

The objective of the research was to identify the main actors of the performing arts field in East Africa and to analyse the relevance and frequency of artistic mobility from that geographical area towards the whole African continent.

With the support of AMA partners in the region and of interviews carried out in situ, the research resulted in a 3 steps publication concerning:

· The identification and mapping of available infrastructure and human resources in the performing arts;

· The identification and analysis of opportunities and the major obstacles to mobility in East Africa;

-Proposal of feasible and practical solutions for the implementation of mobility.
